The size distribution of innovations revisited: an application of extreme value statistics to citation and value measures of patent significance

open access: yes
This paper focuses on the analysis of size distributions of innovations, which are known to be highly skewed. We use patent citations as one indicator of innovation significance, constructing two large datasets from the European and US Patent Offices at ...

Near‐Field Electrospinning Micro‐Printhead Achieves Precise Control of Nanofiber Deposition

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A micro‐printhead for near‐field electrospinning enables reproducible deposition of polymer nanofibers with diameters below 50 nm. Systematic parameter studies uncover the mechanisms linking operating conditions to fiber morphology, paving the way for precise and low‐cost nanoscale 3D manufacturing. As a high‐resolution, cost‐effective, and rapid ...

Estimating Inflation-at-Risk (IaR) using Extreme Value Theory (EVT)

open access: yes
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has the primary responsibility of maintaining stable prices conducive to a balanced and sustainable economic growth. The year 2008 posed a challenge to the BSP’s monetary policy making as inflation hit an official 17-

Portfolio based VaR model: a combination of extreme value theory (EVT) and dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) model

open access: yes, 2013
This thesis fills a gap in the risk management literature and expands the understanding of the portfolio value at risk (VaR) by providing a theoretical market risk measurement of a portfolio (called “GEV-DCC model”), which combines the tail dynamic ...

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Exchange Rate Risk: Heads or Tails [PDF]

open access: yes
More than forty years ago researchers started to reconsider the behavior of financial data. Since then, stylized facts about financial returns have become common knowledge in economics.
