Evaluation of extreme temperature events in northern Spain based on process control charts
Extreme climate events have recently attracted the attention of a growing number of researchers because these events impose a large cost on agriculture and associated insurance planning. This study focuses on extreme temperature events and proposes a new

Ecosystem vulnerability to extreme climate in coastal areas of China
Climate change has far-reaching impacts on ecosystems and the frequency and intensity of extreme global climate events have been increasing over the past century; therefore, assessing ecosystem vulnerability to extreme climate change is critical for ...

Probabilistic assessment of extreme temperature dynamics
In order to estimate likelihood of the annual minimum and maximum Lithuanian air temperatures (based on 1961–2014 data) the probabilistic assessment using the extreme value distributions was performed, in particular, for each sample the best extreme ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...
