Universality classes for extreme-value statistics [PDF]
The low temperature physics of disordered systems is governed by the statistics of extremely low energy states. It is thus rather important to discuss the possible universality classes for extreme value statistics. We compare the usual probabilistic classification to the results of the replica approach.

Climate change impact on groundwater levels: ensemble modelling of extreme values [PDF]
This paper presents a first attempt to estimate future groundwater levels by applying extreme value statistics on predictions from a hydrological model.

Galaxy distribution and extreme-value statistics [PDF]
We consider the conditional galaxy density around each galaxy, and study its fluctuations in the newest samples of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. Over a large range of scales, both the average conditional density and its variance show a nontrivial scaling behavior, which resembles to criticality. The density depends, for 10 < r < 80

Model of contact friction based on extreme value statistics
We propose a model based on extreme value statistics (EVS) and combine it with different models for single-asperity contact, including adhesive and elasto-plastic contacts, to derive a relation between the applied load and the friction force on a rough ...

Determining return levels of extreme daily precipitation, reservoir inflow, and dry spells
Return level calculations are widely used to determine the risks that extreme events may pose to infrastructure, including hydropower site operations.

Extreme value statistics and thermodynamics of earthquakes: large earthquakes
A compound Poisson process is used to derive a new shape parameter which can be used to discriminate between large earthquakes and aftershock sequences.

Extreme value statistics and thermodynamics of earthquakes: aftershock sequences
The Gutenberg-Richter magnitude-frequency law takes into account the minimum detectable magnitude, and treats aftershocks as if they were independent and identically distributed random events.

Extreme Value Theory and Statistics of Univariate Extremes: A Review [PDF]
SummaryStatistical issues arising in modelling univariate extremes of a random sample have been successfully used in the most diverse fields, such as biometrics, finance, insurance and risk theory. Statistics of univariate extremes (SUE), the subject to be dealt with in this review paper, has recently faced a huge development, partially because rare ...

Applied Extreme Value Statistics. [PDF]
The statistical theory of extreme values is a well established part of theoretical statistics. Unfortunately, it is seldom part of applied statistics and is infrequently a part of statistical curricula except in advanced studies programs. This has resulted in the impression that it is difficult to understand and not of practical value.
