Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Modelling Extreme Rainfall in KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa Using Extreme Value Theory

open access: yesMathematical and Computational Applications
This study reviews advanced extreme value theory techniques and applies them to extreme rainfall events recorded at two meteorological stations, Port Edward and Virginia, in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

Extreme Value Theory for Finance: A Survey [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2012
Extreme value theory is concerned with the study of the asymptotical distribution of extreme events, that is to say events which are rare in frequency and huge with respect to the majority of observations. Statistical methods derived from this theory have been increasingly employed in finance, especially in the context of risk measurement.

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Estimation of the Parameter of a pARMAX Model

open access: yesRevstat Statistical Journal, 2010
Max-autoregressive models for time series data are useful when we want to make inference about rare events, mainly in areas like hydrology, geophysics and finance.
