Ecology and habitats of extremophiles

World Journal of Microbiology & Biotechnology, 1995
This review describes the main natural extreme environments, characterized by high temperature, high and low pH and high salinity, that can be colonized by microorganisms. The environments covered are: freshwater alkaline hot springs; acidic solfatara fields; anaerobic geothermal mud and soils; acidic sulphur and pyrite areas; carbonate springs and ...

Polysaccharides from Extremophilic Microorganisms

Origins of life and evolution of the biosphere, 2004
Several marine thermophilic strains were analyzed for exopolysaccharide production. The screening process revealed that a significant number of thermophilic microorganisms were able to produce biopolymers, and some of them also revealed interesting chemical compositions.

Protein stability in extremophilic archaea

Frontiers in Bioscience, 2000
Extremophilic microorganisms have adapted their molecular machinery to grow and thrive under the most adverse environmental conditions. These microorganisms have found their natural habitat at the boiling and freezing point of water, in high salt concentration and at extreme pH values.

Role of Extremophiles and Extremophilic Proteins in Industrial Waste Treatment

2020
Majority of the industrial products are made in variety of extreme environments. These industrial processes generate by-products that are difficult to degrade, harmful for environment, and toxic to animals and humans. These industrial by-products are present in extreme conditions such as high salt and high or low temperature.

Quorum Sensing in Extremophiles

2019
Extremophiles represent a heterogeneous class of organisms that inhabit environments characterized by atypical parameters (high or low temperatures/pH/salinity, etc.). These organisms not only adapt to these habitats, but the exceptional environmental characteristics ensure their optimal growth. The environmental adaptation of extremophiles has been of

New Scientific Journal Extremophiles and the International Society of Extremophiles

2016
At the end of the 1980s, extremophiles were not a popular topic, and research papers on microbes living under unusual conditions met with a cold reception. Many microbiologists used to joke, “Only abnormal researchers investigate abnormal microbes.” In 1995 Ms. Aiko Hiraguchi of Springer visited my office in Shinbashi, Tokyo, and we enjoyed a chat.

Extremophiles in Space Exploration

Indian Journal of Microbiology
In the era of deep space exploration, extremophile research represents a key area of research w.r.t space survival. This review thus delves into the intriguing realm of 'Space and Astro Microbiology', providing insights into microbial survival, resilience, and behavioral adaptations in space-like environments.
