Prospective randomized comparative trial of dexmedetomidine versus esmolol for attenuation of extubation response

open access: yesMedical Journal of Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, 2019
Background and Aims: General anesthesia is known to elicit stress response during endotracheal intubation, but the equally important period of extubation is usually not addressed.

Predictability of unplanned extubations [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI), 2014
Acute life threatening events such as cardiac/respiratory arrests are often predictable in adults and children. However critical events such as unplanned extubations are considered as not predictable. This paper seeks to evaluate the ability of automated prediction systems based on feature space embedding and time series methods to predict unplanned ...

Spontaneous migration of central venous catheter tip following extubation

open access: yesSaudi Journal of Anaesthesia, 2014
Migration of the tip of central venous catheters is not an uncommon event and the mechanism for this is not clear. Increased intrathoracic pressure due to coughing, sneezing or weight lifting, changing the body position or physical movements such as ...

Difficulty in extubation [PDF]

open access: yesAnaesthesia, 1992
Summary Difficulties in removing the tracheal tube from the trachea are relatively uncommon. We report here a case of difficult extubation which was precipitated by pulling off the pilot balloon and valve assembly in order to deflate the cuff.

Extubation failure in the elderly [PDF]

open access: yesRespiratory Medicine, 2004
To determine the causes, risk factors and complications of planned extubation failure of critically ill elderly patients, we conducted a prospective study of 175 consecutive patients (> or = 70 years old) admitted with respiratory failure. Thirty-six (21%) failed extubation within 72 h after planned extubation.

Difficult tracheal extubation [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Anaesthesia, 1989
We describe a case of nasotracheal tube fixation with a screw. A second case is described in which a broken drill bit was found to impinge on the wall but not penetrate into the lumen of a nasotracheal tube. Possible sequelae of this complication include airway leak, aspiration, tube obstruction, and trauma from attempts at forceful extubation.

Mechanical Power Density Predicts Prolonged Ventilation Following Double Lung Transplantation

open access: yesTransplant International, 2023
Prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) after lung transplantation poses several risks, including higher tracheostomy rates and increased in-hospital mortality.

Diagnostic value of an increase in central venous pressure during SBT for prediction of weaning failure in mechanically ventilated patients: A cross‐sectional study

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, 2023
Background Timely and successful extubation is an essential step forward in clinical practice to minimize complications of mechanical ventilation and unsuccessful weaning processes.

Exploring the Interactions Between Epidural Analgesia, Extubation and Reintubation Outcomes in Infants in Neonatal Care Units: A Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesChildren
Background/Objectives: Continuous epidural analgesia is desirable for improving infant outcomes after surgeries. However, its contribution to facilitating extubation is not well known.

An Extubation Protocol for Angioedema [PDF]

open access: yesOTO Open, 2017
Angioedema—nonpitting edema of the mucous membranes and skin—most commonly occurs as a complication from the use of angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors. At our institution, the otolaryngology department has incorporated the use of the endotracheal tube cuff‐leak test and bedside direct laryngoscopy to aid in timing for extubation of angioedema ...
