We used computed tomography to detect and localize foreign bodies in two unusual cases of penetrating injury to the eyes. In one case, a large broken twig appeared to have penetrated the globe and the inferior rectus muscle; in the other, the globe was ruptured by many glass shards .

Penetrating eye injuries remain an important cause of blindness among children.Thirty consecutive children, nine years of age or younger, were treated for penetrating eye injuries. Twenty-two (73%) of those patients studied were male and 8 (17%) were female. The average age of the patients was 4.6 years.

Vitrectomy in Penetrating Eye Injury

A controlled trial of pars plana vitrectomy for posterior penetrating eye injury was done in rhesus monkeys. After standard injury, each eye was allocated randomly into a treatment or control group. Treatment groups (ten eyes each) had vitrectomy at 1, 14, or 70 days after injury. The control group had 15 eyes.

A swine model of penetrating ocular trauma was used to determine the delivery of systemically administered cefazolin to the vitreous cavity of traumatized and nontraumatized eyes.Thirty-one pigs received a scleral laceration to the right eye under anesthesia and then were given intravenous cefazolin every 8 hours.
