The state of modelling face processing in humans with deep learning

open access: yesBritish Journal of Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Deep learning models trained for facial recognition now surpass the highest performing human participants. Recent evidence suggests that they also model some qualitative aspects of face processing in humans. This review compares the current understanding of deep learning models with psychological models of the face processing system ...

Analysis of Facial Occlusion Challenge in Thermal Images for Human Affective State Recognition

open access: yesSensors, 2023
Several studies have been conducted using both visual and thermal facial images to identify human affective states. Despite the advantages of thermal facial images in recognizing spontaneous human affects, few studies have focused on facial occlusion ...

PSHead: 3D Head Reconstruction from a Single Image with Diffusion Prior and Self‐Enhancement

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
We introduce PSHead, a coarse‐to‐fine framework guided by both object and face priors, to produce a Gaussian‐based 3D avatar for a single frontal‐view reference image. In the coarse stage, we create an initial 3D representation by applying diffusion models trained for general object generation, using Score Distillation Sampling losses over novel views.

Gender equity in vision care seeking behavior among caregivers: evidence from a randomized controlled trial in rural China

open access: yesInternational Journal for Equity in Health, 2022
Background Despite rising incomes and rapid economic growth, there remains a significant gender gap in health outcomes among rural children in China. This study examines whether the gender gap in child health is related to the behavior of caregivers when

Attribute-Guided Face Generation Using Conditional CycleGAN

open access: yes, 2018
We are interested in attribute-guided face generation: given a low-res face input image, an attribute vector that can be extracted from a high-res image (attribute image), our new method generates a high-res face image for the low-res input that ...

Imagining Justice Transformation in Aotearoa: Possibilities and Pitfalls

open access: yesKōtuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online, Volume 21, Issue 1, March 2026.
It is well‐noted that for as long as there have been prisons, there has been continued resistance to their use and calls for alternatives. Debates amongst advocates for change in the justice system fixate on whether prison reform or abolition is the answer. This article engages with narratives from 16 semi‐structured interviews with people who advocate
