Chemotherapy of Chagas' disease: state of the art and perspectives for the development of new drugs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Neglected diseases are a major global cause of illness, long-term disability and death. Chagas' disease is a parasitic infection widely distributed throughout Latin America, with devastating consequences in terms of human morbidity and mortality.

Choline Modulation of the Aβ P1‐40 Channel Reconstituted into a Model Lipid Membrane

open access: yesInternational Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Volume 2010, Issue 1, 2010., 2010
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChRs), implicated in memory and learning, in subjects affected by Alzheimer′s disease result altered. Stimulation of α7‐nAChRs inhibits amyloid plaques and increases ACh release. β‐amyloid peptide (AβP) forms ion channels in the cell and model phospholipid membranes that are retained responsible in Alzheimer disease.

The Bioethical Aspects in the Cancer Patients Treated by Means of Clinical Trials in Cuba

open access: yesRevista Iberoamericana de Bioética, 2019
The bioethical aspects in clinical trials are regulated by organizations such as the FDA, the European Agency and, in Cuba, the Centro Nacional Coordinador de Ensayos Clínicos. The aim of this paper is to determine the importance of codes, guidelines and

Lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation in patients affected by Hodgkin′s lymphoma

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, Volume 13, Issue 5-6, Page 381-383, 2004., 2004
A dysregulation of the redox homoeostasis has been reported in various neoplastic disorders. Malondialdehyde/4‐hydroxy‐2,3‐nonenal (MDA/HNE) and protein carbonyl groups represent in vivo indexes of lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation, respectively, suitable to investigate radical‐mediated physio‐pathological conditions.

Structural changes of tissue samples exposed to low frequency electromagnetic field: A FT‐IR absorbance study

open access: yesJournal of Spectroscopy, Volume 18, Issue 4, Page 513-518, 2004., 2004
In the present work, we report on a preliminary Fourier Transform Infrared (FT‐IR) Absorbance study performed on different kind of rat tissues, such as kidney and heart, exposed to a “non‐ionizing” radiation source at low frequency, in the range typical of micro‐waves (300 MHz < v < 300 GHz).

FT‐IR spectroscopy for the detection of liver damage

open access: yesJournal of Spectroscopy, Volume 18, Issue 1, Page 67-73, 2004., 2004
A spectroscopic analysis of hepatotoxic effects on rat liver, caused by a single administration of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), has been performed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT‐IR) absorption technique in a wide range of frequency 3000–400 cm–1. The spectral investigation has permitted us to mark the dynamical changes of rat liver samples vs.

Malondialdehyde in benign prostate hypertrophy: a useful marker?

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, Volume 12, Issue 2, Page 127-128, 2003., 2003
Benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) is the most common benign tumor in men due to obstruction of the urethra and, finally, uremia. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a product derived from peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and related esters. Evaluation of MDA in serum represents a non‐invasive biomarker of oxidative stress.

Protein carbonyl group content in patients affected by familiar chronic nail candidiasis

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, Volume 12, Issue 4, Page 247-249, 2003., 2003
Familiar chronic nail candidiasis (FCNC) is a rare disorder characterized by early‐onset infections caused by different species of Candida, restricted to the nail of the hands and feet, and associated with a low serum concentration of intercellular adhesion molecule 1.
