Laser cooling in a Fabry-Perot resonator

We develop a first-principles description of the mechanical effects of light on a single two-level atom in a Fabry-Perot interferometer. Our analysis is based on the plane-wave and semiclassical approximations, but within this context it yields general equations that include propagation effects and allow arbitrary parameters of the resonator.

Theory of a CARM with a Fabry-Perot resonator

A slow-time-scale, single-particle theory of the CARM oscillator with a Fabry-Perot resonator is presented for the case of mirror separation much greater than the Rayleigh length. Analytical results are obtained for the small-signal gain, efficiency and threshold current. The optimum nonlinear efficiency is presented in terms of F—μ plots.

A numerical simulation has been carried out on a Fabry-Perot open resonator excited through a beam splitter and loaded with a plate. The results show that, while the influence of the beam splitter is negligible when the plate is resonant, the beam splitter plays a very important role in measuring an off-resonance plate of a low loss material.

The resonant waves in a Fabry-Perot Interferometer are investigated on the basis of a standing-wave type formulation. This formulation leads to a homogeneous Fredholm integral equation whose kernel is real and symmetric when cartesian coordinates are used but it cannot be represented as a product of two uni-dependent functions.

Spherical Mirror Fabry-Perot Resonators

An experimental investigation of the Fabry-Perot interfometer (FPS) using spherical mirrors is reported. The FPS was operated as a microwave resonant cavity at 60 to 70 Gc. Measurements were made of the loss and coupling as a function of mirror spacing. The electric field variation within the resonator was also measured.
