Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...

Face Alignment with Part-Based Modeling [PDF]

open access: yesProcedings of the British Machine Vision Conference 2011, 2011
We propose a new method for face alignment with part-based modeling. This method is competitive in terms of precision with existing methods such as Active Appearance Models, but is more robust and ...

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Blockwise Linear Regression for Face Alignment [PDF]

open access: yesProcedings of the British Machine Vision Conference 2013, 2013
Parameterized Appearance Models, such as Active Appearance Models (AAM), Morphable Models, or Boosted Appearance Models, have been extensively used for face alignment. Discriminative methods learn a mapping function between appearance features and shape parameters.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Digital design and evaluation for additive manufacturing of personalized myopic glasses

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Myopic glasses design has critical effects on the match between glasses and individual face. Improper myopic glasses design may affect the try-on comfort and health.

Sign correlation subspace for face alignment [PDF]

open access: yesSoft Computing, 2018
© 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature. Face alignment is an essential task for facial performance capture and expression analysis. Current methods such as random subspace supervised descent method, stage-wise relational dictionary and coarse-to-fine shape searching can ease multi-pose face alignment problem, but no method can ...
