Geometry-driven photorealistic facial expression synthesis

IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 2006
Expression mapping (also called performance driven animation) has been a popular method for generating facial animations. A shortcoming of this method is that it does not generate expression details such as the wrinkles due to skin deformations. In this paper, we provide a solution to this problem.

Perception-driven facial expression synthesis

Computers & Graphics, 2012
We propose a novel platform to flexibly synthesize any arbitrary meaningful facial expression in the absence of actor performance data for that expression. With techniques from computer graphics, we synthesized random arbitrary dynamic facial expression animations.

Synthesis of Facial Expressions in Photographs

ACM Computing Surveys, 2019
The synthesis of facial expressions has applicationsin areas such as interactive games, biometrics systems, and training of people with disorders, among others. Although this is an area relatively well explored in the literature, there are no recent studies proposing to systematize an overview of research in the area.

Joint Expression Synthesis and Representation Learning for Facial Expression Recognition

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, 2022
Facial expression recognition (FER) is a challenging task due to the large appearance variations and the lack of sufficient training data. Conventional deep approaches either learn a good representation through deep models or synthesize images automatically to enlarge the training set.

Synthesis of Realistic Facial Expressions Using Expression Map

IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, 2019
For synthesis of realistic facial expressions displaying emotions, we need an efficient representation of pure (e.g., surprise ) as well as mixed (e.g., happily surprised ) emotional expressions. In this paper, we train an expression map (XM) that efficiently represents the emotional expressions.

Expressive Facial Animation Synthesis by Learning Speech Coarticulation and Expression Spaces

IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 2006
Synthesizing expressive facial animation is a very challenging topic within the graphics community. In this paper, we present an expressive facial animation synthesis system enabled by automated learning from facial motion capture data. Accurate 3D motions of the markers on the face of a human subject are captured while he/she recites a predesigned ...

Facial Expression Synthesis on Robots

Proceedings of the Tenth Annual ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction Extended Abstracts, 2015
We present a generalized technique for easily synthesizing facial expressions on robotic faces. In contrast to other work, our approach works in near real time with a high level of accuracy, does not require any manual labeling, is a fully open-source ROS module, and can enable the research community to perform objective and systematic comparisons ...

MPEG-4 facial expression synthesis

Personal and Ubiquitous Computing, 2007
The current work will describe an approach to synthesize expressions, including intermediate ones, via the tools provided in the MPEG-4 standard based on real measurements and on universally accepted assumptions of their meaning, taking into account results of Whissel's study.

Analysis-based facial expression synthesis

Proceedings of 1st International Conference on Image Processing, 2002
We describe an approach to synthesizing human expressions based on 3D face model and the facial motion parameters obtained by tracking the model vertices in real expression sequences. The synthetic sequences of different expressions can be generated by deforming the face model using these motion parameters.

FACIAL EXPRESSION SYNTHESIS BASED ON FACIAL COMPONENT MODEL

International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, 2009
Statistical model based facial expression synthesis methods are robust and can be easily used in real environment. But facial expressions of humans are varied. How to represent and synthesize expressions that are is not included in the training set is an unresolved problem in statistical model based researches.
