Watching Radical Geography: Spaces and Practices of Authoritarian Surveillance in ‘Democratic’ and ‘Dictatorial’ Brazil

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 58, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper addresses stories of surveillance of Brazilian critical/radical geographers, drawing on innovative sources. That is, the folders and reports through which the political police and related institutions watched critical and radical scholars during the 20th century in all Brazilian states and abroad, under both ‘dictatorial’ and ...

Evolution in Response to an Abiotic Stress Shapes Species Coexistence

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 12, December 2025.
This study shows that when two spider mite species evolve separately on tomato plants hyperaccumulating cadmium—a stressful environment—their adaptation leads to reduced competition between them and increased intraspecific competition. As a result, instead of one species excluding the other, both can coexist.

Social media videos highlight the impacts of the illegal use of snares on Brazilian biodiversity

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 11, Page 2811-2820, November 2025.
Abstract Snares are one of the most used types of non‐selective traps for hunting worldwide, though their use is prohibited in many countries, including Brazil. Indiscriminate and unmonitored use of snares can induce serious conservation problems, particularly in megadiverse countries where higher species richness and diversity mean that the ...

Estimating the Effective Population Size Across Space and Time in the Critically Endangered Western Chimpanzee in Guinea‐Bissau: Challenges and Implications for Conservation Management

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 18, Issue 10, October 2025.
ABSTRACT The western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) is a Critically Endangered taxon. In Guinea‐Bissau (GB), the subspecies is increasingly threatened, but there is a lack of understanding regarding the degree of genetic threat faced by populations.

Mapping Resilient Landscapes to Climate Change in a Megadiverse Country

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 10, October 2025.
Our mapping of terrestrial climate‐resilient sites for biodiversity across Brazil identifies sites with greater chances of providing suitable conditions for species to persist under regional climate change. Landscape resilience information has the potential to be used to effectively guide decision‐making and public policy on strategies for conservation,

Forest Age Rivals Climate to Explain Reproductive Allocation Patterns in Forest Ecosystems Globally

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 8, August 2025.
Forest allocation of net primary productivity (NPP) to reproduction is poorly quantified globally, despite its critical role in forest regeneration and a well‐supported trade‐off with allocation to growth. We present the first global synthesis of forest reproductive allocation (RA) using a comprehensive dataset of 824 observations across 393 sites ...
