Summary: Fair queueing is a novel queueing discipline with important applications to data networks that support variable-size packets and to systems where the cost of preempting jobs from service is high. The discipline controls a single server shared by \(N\) job arrival streams with each stream allotted a separate queue.

Fairness is a basic phenomenon in distributed and non-deterministic systems, firstly noted perhaps in allocation strategies for schedules. The basic idea of a fair behaviour is that no subprocess shall be delayed forever. For a systematical study of fairness it is difficult to choose an appropriate model and fairness conception.

When Barbette flies in the air, he is the eternal androgyne who escapes the downgrading of time, as opposed to the woman acrobat, deformed by work, suggested French journalist Maurice Verne in 1930 (218), praising androgynous male beauty over female degradation. Barbette’s performance, in effect, combined feminine and masculine gestures.

Most published concurrent data structures which avoid locking do not provide any fairness guarantees. That is, they allow processes to access a data structure and complete their operations arbitrarily many times before some other trying process can complete a single operation. Such a behavior can be prevented by enforcing fairness.

Given the recent changes in the policy governing Internet content distribution, such as the institution of per listener royalties for Internet radio broadcasters, content distributors now have an incentive to under-report the size of their audience. Previous audience measurement schemes only protect against inflation of audience size.

A Fair Test of the Fair Innings?
Medical Decision Making, 2006Priority setting in health care under conventional rules of health economic evaluation is based upon the ethos of attempting to maximize post-treatment health gain given available health care resources. In his later years, Alan Williams advocated the ``fair innings argument,'' which balances differences in whole lifetime experiences of health with ...
