Report of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) on the effects of climate change on the risk of transmission of foodborne pathogens

open access: yesFood Risk Assess Europe, Volume 3, Issue 3, July 2025.
Abstract The Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has carried out an updated review of the scientific evidence on the influence of climate change on the transmission of foodborne pathogens. This global phenomenon represents an emerging threat to food safety and public health, since alterations in weather ...

Hatching response to temperature along a latitudinal gradient by the fairy shrimp Branchinecta lindahli (Crustacea; Branchiopoda; Anostraca) in culture conditions

open access: yesJournal of Limnology, 2014
Branchinecta lindahli is a broadly distributed fairy shrimp, reported from a range of temporary wetland habitat types in arid western North America. This species’ eggs hatch after the habitat dries, refills from seasonal rain, and receives a strong cold ...

Black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, larvae meal improves intestinal health and growth performance of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, juveniles

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 56, Issue 3, June 2025.
Abstract This study investigated the effects of dietary black soldier fly (BSF) larvae, Hermetia illucens, meal on growth performance, feed utilization, intestinal health, and immune response in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, juveniles. The fish (initial weight: 7.28 ± 0.09 g) were reared in a recirculatory aquaculture system (RAS) and fed diets ...

Effects of Inundation Length On Fairy Shrimp

open access: yes, 2013
Phyllopods (fairy shrimp, tadpole shrimp, and clam shrimp) are the species that best characterize freshwater rock pool communities around the world because of their unique adaptations to temporary conditions.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction‐Based Assays for Surveying 125 Taxa of Importance to North America

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 3, May–June 2025.
We present 125 eDNA quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays against animal species of importance to North America. We show how these assays were designed and validated to comply with the Canadian national eDNA standards to allow confident eDNA detection for coastal and inland ecological surveys and biosurveillance.

Physiological constraints on the life cycle and distribution of the Antarctic fairy shrimp Branchinecta gaini

open access: yes, 2008
Maturation to adulthood and successful reproduction in the Antarctic fairy shrimp, Branchinecta gaini, must be completed within a physiologically challenging temporal window of ca. 2.5 months in the southern Antarctic Peninsula.

Tadpole Skin Secretions, Not Food or Temperature, Mediate Costly Cannibal‐Induced Plasticity in Invasive Cane Toad Hatchlings

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Hatchlings of invasive cane toads respond to the risk of cannibalism by accelerating development but experience significant negative carry‐over effects on fitness in the tadpole stage. Our experiments demonstrate that this hatchling response is induced by chemicals located in the skin of older cannibalistic tadpoles. This response is unique to cannibal

Morphological review of the freshwater fairy shrimp Dendrocephalus brasiliensis Pesta, 1921 (Anostraca: Thamnocephalidae)

open access: yesNauplius
Information concerning the morphology of Dendrocephalus brasiliensis Pesta, 1921 is currently fragmented. This study reviewed the morphological structures described previously and new features (e.g., antenna-like structures and gonopod).
