Overwintering and Resident Birds in Qatar: Explorations With DNA Barcoding
We obtained DNA barcodes for 115 birds (34 species, 12 orders) in Qatar, a country with no previous barcode sequence data for wild birds. We provide insights on locally breeding species and overwintering migrants. ABSTRACT Genetic research is unevenly distributed across the globe, with most research done in temperate zones.

Recently, the hypothesis that the geographic distribution of species could be influenced by the shape of the domain edges, the so-called Mid-Domain Effect (MDE), has been included as one of the five credible hypotheses for explaining spatial gradients in

Variation in colour complexity in the Paridae is linked to climate, climate variability and several biotic factors. The strength of the associations is patch specific. Variables related to resource competition are more strongly associated with colour complexity of the head and breast than with that of the back and wing.

Characterization of chromosome structures of Falconinae (Falconidae, Falconiformes, Aves) by chromosome painting and delineation of chromosome rearrangements during their differentiation [PDF]
Karyotypes of most bird species are characterized by around 2n = 80 chromosomes, comprising 7–10 pairs of large- and medium-sized macrochromosomes including sex chromosomes and numerous morphologically indistinguishable microchromosomes.

Intraspecific variation and detectability of iridescence in the dorsal coloration of a wall lizard
Wall lizards (genus Podarcis) show substantial intraspecific colour variation and iridescence, which may interact and affect overall colour appearance. Here, we set out to study iridescence in Podarcis liolepis in two localities in which lizards are known to differ in dorsal coloration. Our results show that P.

Assessment of a Social Media‐Based Method for Determining Raptor Diet
This study mined social media as a citizen science method to reduce the time burden and biases associated with recording accurate diet information for predators. In total, 1985 prey observations were recorded of two Australian coastal raptors and were used to produce diet profiles that were compared by region, social media platform, and against other ...

Behavioural and environmental correlates of soaring-bird mortality at on-shore wind turbines [PDF]
1. Wind power plants represent a risk of bird mortality, but the effects are still poorly quantified. We measured bird mortality, analysed the factors that led birds to fly close to turbines, and proposed mitigation measures at two wind farms installed ...
