Alcohol recovery in falling film evaporators

Applied Thermal Engineering, 2002
Falling film evaporators can be used to recover alcohol and other volatile compounds from waste products, and as part of the primary production process. A simple model has been developed to predict the performance of the equipment. Measurements made on commercial installations have confirmed the validity of the model over a range of operating ...

Scale deposition from an evaporating falling film

Desalination, 1975
Abstract A study was made of the factors governing CaCO3 scale deposition from an evaporating falling film, on a heated aluminum tube. A kinetic model was developed describing scale layer growth. The results of this work provide a basic background enabling a more rational approach for conducting practical work related to the scaling problem.

Computational modeling of turbulent evaporating falling films

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2015
Abstract The primary objective of this study is to construct a computational model for turbulent, free-falling liquid films subjected to evaporative heating. The model is developed for two-dimensional axisymmetric flow on a vertical circular tube, with both the computational domain and operating conditions matching those of an experimental database ...

Falling film evaporation of single component liquids

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 1998
Abstract Heat transfer coefficients for evaporation of single-component liquids in falling films were experimentally measured over an extended range of parameters. By using two different fluids (propylene glycol and water), over a range of absolute pressures, it was possible to extend the existing data base by an order of magnitude in Prandtl numbers.

Numerical investigation on characteristics of falling film in horizontal-tube falling film evaporator

Desalination and Water Treatment, 2014
AbstractHorizontal-tube falling film technology is widely used in multi-effect desalination plant. The film characteristics of falling water film outside the tubes in horizontal-tube falling film evaporator were simulated. The numerical result was compared with the experimental result and they were proven with good agreement.

Heat-transfer film coefficients of falling film horizontal tube evaporators

Desalination, 2004
Abstract The film thickness distribution and average thickness outside a horizontal test tube were measured with a film-thickness meter. The effects of liquid load, evaporation boiling point, temperature difference and tube diameter on the film thickness, the waving intensity and, as a result, the heat-transfer film coefficients outside the ...

Mass transfer in evaporating falling liquid film mixtures

AIChE Journal, 1992
We provide the formulation of the governing equations and boundary conditions that describe the evaporation of two-component liquid films falling down a vertical surface. Based on these governing equations, the concentration profile and axially developing Sherwood numbers are calculated by a numerical procedure.

Experimental and theoretical investigations of falling film evaporation

Heat and Mass Transfer, 2012
In this study, a mathematical model was developed for falling film evaporation in vacuum using heat transfer relations. An experimental device was designed. experimental set-up which was used was equipped with a triangular weir distribution device and it had the ability to record data up to 3 m.

Factors Affecting Heat Transfer in Falling Film Evaporators

Food and Bioproducts Processing, 1997
Apilot scale single-tube falling film evaporator (2 metres length of heating tube) was used to gain some understanding of the mechanism of evaporation in this type of evaporator. Results obtained from commercial milk evaporators were used to select operating conditions on the pilot evaporator.

Heat Transfer in Falling Film Evaporators

1992
Falling film evaporators consist of vertically arranged heating surfaces. Tubes are usually used. From these, a liquid flows off in the form of a thin film and is evaporated by the addition of heat. Frequently, in such apparatus, a solvent is to be extracted by evaporation from a solution consisting of a solvent (water or organic solvent) and the ...
