It has been reported that amelanotic melanoma is the great masquerader; however, any melanoma has the potential to fool the most experienced clinician. It is not possible to make the diagnosis 100% of the time no matter what clinical aids one uses. Experienced clinicians can diagnose melanoma clinically 60–75% of the time.

Ethical controversies may arise when genome sequencing reveals a genetic variant that is thought to be pathogenic, but the patient has no symptoms. This could be due to variable penetrance or expressivity. It could also result from a misclassification of the gene as pathogenic.

Data Review for False Negatives
2022Publicly and widely reported data are a useful platform that allows hospitals to focus their performance activities. Yet, there may be events and trends that are not captured by these metrics. The context of false-negative events is developed as referring to real complications that occurred but were not identified through administrative data, such as ...

False‐positive and false‐negative neck nodes
Head & Neck Surgery, 1985AbstractWe report our experience of the incidence of false‐positive (i.e., clinically positive and histologically negative) and false‐negative (i.e., clinically negative and histologically positive) neck nodes and define their relationship to the primary site, T‐stage, and the histologic grade of the primary lesion.

False-Negative Bromsulfalein Tests
New England Journal of Medicine, 1961ALTHOUGH it is widely used in evaluation of hepatic function, the validity of the bromsulfalein test has been questioned since with the standard clinical procedure1 results are occasionally negative in the presence of established liver disease. Normal values in these cases could be due to errors in dosage, improper sampling time, extrahepatic removal ...

Estimation of False Negatives in Classification
Fourth IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM'04), 2005In many classification problems such as spam detection and network intrusion, a large number of unlabeled test instances are predicted negative by the classifier However, the high costs as well as time constraints on an expert's time prevent further analysis of the "predicted false" class instances in order to segregate the false negatives from the ...

Falsely negative cholecystography and cholangiography
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases, 1968Three patients with symptomatic biliary calculi and normal cholecystography or cholangiography are presented. Despite the excellent diagnostic accuracy of biliary tract roentgenography, falsely negative examination results may occur, thereby creating a major diagnostic and therapeutic problem if all the available clinical data is not evaluated.

To the Editor.— The article "Evaluation of Bone Pain in Carcinoma of the Lung: Role of the Localized False-Negative Scan" by Covelli et al (1980; 244:2625) describes finding gross tumor in vertebral bodies on postmortem examination in ten of 43 patients, all of whom had bone scans and roentgenograms with normal vertebral area interpretations.

False positives and false negatives in benzene biological monitoring
Environmental ResearchBenzene is a commonly used industrial chemical that is a significant environmental pollutant. Occupational health specialists and industrial toxicologists are concerned with determining the exact amount of exposure to chemicals in the workplace. There are two main approaches to assess chemical exposure; air monitoring and biological monitoring.
