T. P. MURRAY1 described the measurement by ellipsometry of the thickness of oil films present on commercial tinplate. In his arrangement the elliptically polarized light reflected from the specimen surface was brought into a plane by means of a quarter-wave plate and the extinction position of the analyser found.

The relationship between the measured Verdet constants of a number of molecules and the quantum-mechanical theory of the Faraday effect is examined. The observed behavior of nitric oxide, which is significantly different from that of the diamagnetic gases, is explained by a consideration of the effect on the Verdet constant of the transition from the ...

The optical Faraday effect hysteresigraph is an instrument for measuring the static thermomagneto-optic properties of thin transparent magnetic film samples. Via an oscilloscope, it displays 60 Hz magnetic hysteresis loops of the samples over a temperature range of 20°C±40°, with peak magnetic fields of 2600 Oe.

Faraday–Stark optoelectronic effect
Applied Physics Letters, 1996An optoelectronic effect based on Faraday or Kerr rotation and the quantum-confined Stark shift is demonstrated. It is novel in that the degree of rotation is controlled by an electric field as opposed to a magnetic field. By applying an electric field to a quantum well structure, the Faraday rotation can be tuned into resonance, thereby varying the ...

The method of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of submicron powders with subsequent vacuum sintering was used to produce a series of optical ceramics based on dysprosium oxide (DyxY0.95-xLa0.05)2O3, where x=0.7, 0.85, and 0.9. The influence of

Nonlinear anomalous ferromagnetic Faraday effect
Physical Review E, 1995Two electromagnetic waves with the same frequencies and different polarizations may propagate together in a saturated ferrite. We investigate how the simultaneous presence of the two waves affects their modulation. It is found that their evolution is governed by two independent nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations.

A theory is given for the Faraday rotation in paramagnetic salts and curves for the rotation angle as a function of applied field are calculated. For comparison with theory, results are given of measurements made on several manganese salts at a wavelength of 9.9 cm and the agreement is good.

Spatiotemporal Chaos in the Faraday Effect
Applied Scientific Research, 1993Spatiotemporal chaos in parametrically excited surface waves is compared to fully developed turbulence. Measured correlation functions decay in both space and time. In contrast to turbulence, the inertial range is absent in the Faraday experiment and intermittency is concentrated at a few preferred wavelengths.
