, 1989 In the preceding chapter it was shown that, under ideal conditions, a light wave in a dielectric material would form an envelope soliton. However, in a real three-dimensional fiber, the light wave propagates with finite loss. In this chapter, we discuss the practical conditions needed for an optical pulse to become a soliton in a dielectric waveguide.
