Every bit helps: The functional role of individuals in assembling any plant community, from the richest to monospecific ones

We introduce the idea of a phenotype‐based community ecology, which accounts for the variation between individuals (phenotypes both affected by and affecting the environment) while considering their interactions with neighbours. This framework could help explaining coexistence from rich plant communities to monocultures.
