Childhood Environmental Exposures and Adult Disease

open access: yesPediatric Pulmonology, Volume 61, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT The association of early life adverse events with worse adult outcomes was first proposed by David Barker, the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). Subsequently we have learned that adverse exposures are not merely important during pregnancy, but also exert transgenerational effects.

Mapping Air Quality Risk in Cape Town, South Africa: Implications for Environmental Justice

open access: yesGeoHealth, Volume 10, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Air pollution disproportionately impacts socially vulnerable communities, yet spatial analyzes that integrate social vulnerability and air quality indicators are limited in low‐ and middle‐income countries. This study provided the first comprehensive spatial assessment of air pollution risk in Cape Town, South Africa, combining air quality ...

The Therapeutic Potential of Farm Dust Extracts in a Mouse Model of Eosinophilic Inflammation

open access: yesAllergy, Volume 81, Issue 4, Page 1173-1192, April 2026.
Farm dust extract (FDE) treatment reduces airway eosinophilia, mucus overproduction, and MHC‐II expression on DCs, limiting antigen presentation and Th2 inflammation. It increases PD‐L1 on DCs, promoting T cell deactivation. Additionally, FDE enhances Tregs and upregulates CTLA‐4, reinforcing suppression.

Characterization of NLRP3 isoforms in bullfrog Aquarana catesbeiana and their role in antibacterial immunity

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 57, Issue 2, April 2026.
Abstract The NLRP3 inflammasome is essential for innate immunity against pathogens, yet its function in amphibians remains poorly understood. Here, we identified and cloned two novel isoforms of NLRP3 from the American bullfrog (Aquarana catesbeiana), designated AcNLRP3 X1 and AcNLRP3 X2, with open reading frames of 2397 bp (798 aa) and 2874 bp (957 aa)

α‐Adrenergic blockade impairs ductus venosus shunting during an acute period of fetal hypoxaemia without further deficits to cerebral oxygen delivery

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 4, Page 1796-1807, 1 April 2026.
Abstract The fetal circulation has unique shunts, including the ductus venosus (DV), the tone of which dictates how much substrate‐rich blood returning from the placenta is streamed preferentially away from the liver and instead towards the heart. Herein, we aimed to use clinically relevant MRI techniques in sheep to measure indirectly induced changes ...
