Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

High Efficiency Intra CU Partition and Mode Decision Method for VVC

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2022
Versatile video coding (VVC/H.266) is the newest video compression standard, which is developed by the Joint Video Experts Team. Compared with previous encoding schemes, VVC achieves higher compression efficiency by introducing a new partition structure ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Synergistic combination of systems for structural health monitoring and earthquake early warning for structural health prognosis and diagnosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Earthquake early warning (EEW) systems are currently operating nationwide in Japan and are in beta-testing in California. Such a system detects an earthquake initiation using online signals from a seismic sensor network and broadcasts a warning of the ...

Fast and adaptive mode decision and CU partition early termination algorithm for intra-prediction in HEVC

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing, 2017
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC or H.265), the latest international video coding standard, displays a 50% bit rate reduction with nearly equal quality and dramatically higher coding complexity compared with H.264.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Fast CU Partition Decision Method Based on Texture Characteristics for H.266/VVC

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
The versatile video coding (VVC) is the latest video coding standard, which uses a Multi-Type Tree (MTT) coding structure. Compared with existing video coding standards, this structure can flexibly split coding blocks according to the complex texture ...

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.
