To what extent is bone mass determined by fat-free or fat mass?
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1995One hundred sixty-four healthy black and white women aged 24-79 y were studied to determine to what extent bone mass is determined by fat-free mass (FFM). A multicomponent approach to body composition, with techniques that are not interdependent, was used.

Fat-free mass and fat mass in active boys during adolescence
American Journal of Human Biology, 1997Longitudinal body composition data were examined in 24 active and 10 control boys between the ages of 12.3 and 15.3 years. The main objectives were (1) to contrast the distance and velocity curves of fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) in active and control groups using chronological and maturity bases, and (2) to compare the timing and magnitude of ...

Different limit to the body's ability of increasing fat-free mass
Metabolism, 2001It is a common understanding that fat-free mass (FFM) increases with body weight. However, limited information is available as to the relationship between weight increase and changes in body composition. We performed the present study to determine quantitatively the relationship between body composition, total body weight, age, and sex.

Energy expenditure and fat-free mass in men and women
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1981Energy expenditure was measured by direct calorimetry in 15 men and women aged 22 to 55. There were fifty-nine 24-h measurements under quiet, not basal, conditions of sedentary activity with 8 h of sleep at night, regular meals, and food intake adjusted to match individual expenditures.

Indexation of left ventricular mass in adults with a novel approximation for fat-free mass
Journal of Hypertension, 2001Indexation to fat-free mass (FFM) seems to be the best option for adjusting left ventricular (LV) mass. However, measurements of FFM are frequently not available. To define the relation of FFM with commonly available anthropometric measures in order to derive an approximation formula of FFM that can be used for valid indexation of LV mass.A total of 1 ...

Total Body Potassium and Fat Free Mass in CAPD
1986Total body potassium and fat free mass were measured in 52 CAPD patients and 52 age-matched controls. Hand-grip strength and anthropometric measurements were also made in order to measure nutritional status in the two groups. Total body potassium correlated less well with free fat mass (and quantitatively was less) in CAPD patients than in normal ...
