Differential impacts between fat mass index and fat-free mass index on patients with COPD
Respiratory Medicine, 2023Differences in the clinical impacts of fat mass index (FMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) remain unclear in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We hypothesized that FMI and FFMI have different impacts on 1) emphysema and 2) pulmonary function and health-related quality of life of COPD patients.Patients with COPD (n = 228 ...

Indexation of left ventricular mass in adults with a novel approximation for fat-free mass
Journal of Hypertension, 2001Indexation to fat-free mass (FFM) seems to be the best option for adjusting left ventricular (LV) mass. However, measurements of FFM are frequently not available. To define the relation of FFM with commonly available anthropometric measures in order to derive an approximation formula of FFM that can be used for valid indexation of LV mass.A total of 1 ...

The prognostic impact of BIA-derived fat-free mass index in patients with cancer
Clinical Nutrition, 2021Reduced muscle mass represents one of the top ranked phenotypic criteria for malnutrition proposed by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition. Although height-indexed fat-free mass (FFMI) thresholds have been proposed as useful surrogate measures of reduced muscle mass, the independent prognostic value of BIA-derived FFMI by bioelectric ...

Fat-Free Mass Index in a Diverse Sample of Male Collegiate Athletes
Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2019Abstract Currier, BS, Harty, PS, Zabriskie, HA, Stecker, RA, Moon, JM, Jagim, AR, and Kerksick, CM. Fat-free mass index in a diverse sample of male collegiate athletes. J Strength Cond Res 33(6): 1474–1479, 2019—Fat-free mass index (FFMI) is a body composition metric that has been used to assess relative muscularity in athletes. Fat-free mass

Fat-Free Mass Index in Users and Nonusers of Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids
Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, 1995We calculated fat-free mass index (FFMI) in a sample of 157 male athletes, comprising 83 users of anabolic-androgenic steroids and 74 nonusers. FFMI is defined by the formula (fat-free body mass in kg) x (height in meters)-2. We then added a slight correction of 6.3 x (1.80 m - height) to normalize these values to the height of a 1.8-m man.

Fat-free mass index and fat mass index percentiles in Caucasians aged 18–98 y
International Journal of Obesity, 2002To determine reference values for fat-free mass index (FFMI) and fat mass index (FMI) in a large Caucasian group of apparently healthy subjects, as a function of age and gender and to develop percentile distribution for these two parameters.Cross-sectional study in which bioelectrical impedance analysis (50 kHz) was measured (using tetrapolar ...

Low fat-free mass index (FFMI) has been related to a higher mortality in community populations. However, information on the relationship between FFMI and mortality is lacking for patients with cancer. The objective of this study was to examine the association between FFMI and all-cause mortality in Chinese cancer patients. This retrospective analysis ...

Fat‐free mass index predicts survival in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Respirology, 2016ABSTRACT Background and objectiveDetailed body composition, such as fat‐free mass, has not been examined in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). We investigated whether the fat‐free mass index (FFMI), an index of lean body mass, predicted survival.MethodsForty‐four patients with IPF were enrolled in the study. Their body composition was assessed using

We aim to examine the influence of sex, age, region and ethnicity on fat mass index (FMI) and fat free mass index (FFMI), and to establish FMI and FFMI reference values in Chinese adults.A stratified cluster sampling method was adopted to enroll Chinese participants in this cross-sectional study.

Sedentarism affects body fat mass index and fat-free mass index in adults aged 18 to 98 years
Nutrition, 2004Body mass index does not discriminate body fat from fat-free mass or determine changes in these parameters with physical activity and aging. Body fat mass index (BFMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) permit comparisons of subjects with different heights.
