Mass Production of Juveniles of the Fat Snook Centropomus parallelus in Brazil

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, 2002
AbstractA pilot‐scale trial to rear fat snook Centropomus parallelus through larval, weaning and nursery phases was conducted in Florianópolis, Brazil. Eggs (96% fertilization) from captive broodstock, induced to spawn using 50 μg/kg LHRHa were stocked in two 4,000‐L cylindrical fiberglass tanks at a mean density of 19.2 eggs/L. Nannochloropsis oculata

Water-soluble fraction of petroleum induces genotoxicity and morphological effects in fat snook (Centropomus parallelus)

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2017
Petroleum hydrocarbons are one of the primary organic chemicals found in water bodies, and the water-soluble fraction of petroleum (WSFP) may be responsible for much of the toxic effects. In the present study, genotoxicity assays and histopathological analysis of the gills were analyzed for two experimental protocols: 1) Juvenile Centropomus parallelus

The catch of the day: The shortcomings of promoting sustainable seafood consumption in Peru

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study investigates the meaning and application of “catch of the day” in Peru by analyzing 233 news articles and genetically testing 43 fish samples from restaurants. Results show that media frequently use the term as a vague marketing phrase, while genetic testing reveals a 60% mislabeling rate. These findings suggest that “catch of the day” lacks

Synergistic Effect of Salinity and 17β‐Estradiol on the Induced Feminization of Centropomus undecimalis: Histological, Hormonal, and Molecular Evaluation

open access: yesAquaculture Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The scarcity of functional females in wild Centropomus undecimalis populations limits broodstock development for aquaculture. This study evaluated feminization of this protandrous hermaphroditic teleost under different salinity conditions using 17β‐estradiol (E2), administered orally to juveniles and via intramuscular implants to adults.

The Interplay of Biotic and Abiotic Factors in Shaping Genetic Variation at 6Pgdh in the Bulb Mite

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
We used experimental evolution to track changes in 6Pgdh allele frequencies in bulb mites over 13 generations under different temperatures and sexual selection intensities. Our results show that the F allele increases in frequency only at low temperatures under strong sexual selection, indicating that the maintenance of genetic variation in this system

Measuring juvenile habitat quality for fishes and invertebrates

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 6, Page 2346-2395, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Identifying the role of marine and estuarine habitats in supporting fish and invertebrate populations during vulnerable juvenile life stages is essential to achieve effective conservation and fisheries management. There remains general agreement that: (i) the quality of juvenile habitat is best measured as the contribution of juveniles to ...

Infection dynamics of endosymbionts that manipulate arthropod reproduction

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 5, Page 1787-1812, October 2025.
ABSTRACT A large proportion of arthropod species are infected with endosymbionts, some of which selfishly alter host reproduction. The currently known forms of parasitic reproductive manipulations are male‐killing, feminization, cytoplasmic incompatibility, parthenogenesis induction and distortion of sex allocation.

Recent advancements in aquaponics with special emphasis on its sustainability

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 56, Issue 1, February 2025.
Abstract An aquaponic system which is an integration of hydroponics with aquaculture is sustainable, ecologically friendly, and uses non‐renewable resources with very high efficacy. The increasing trend in aquaponics research demonstrates a growing recognition of its potential to address critical global issues such as food security, water conservation,

The frequency and chemical phenotype of neighboring plants determine the effects of intraspecific plant diversity

open access: yesEcology, Volume 105, Issue 9, September 2024.
Abstract Associational effects, whereby plants influence the biotic interactions of their neighbors, are an important component of plant–insect interactions. Plant chemistry has been hypothesized to mediate these interactions. The role of chemistry in associational effects, however, has been unclear in part because the diversity of plant chemistry ...

Behavior of diclofenac from contaminated fish after cooking and in vitro digestion

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 104, Issue 10, Page 5964-5972, 15 August 2024.
Abstract BACKGROUND Seafood consumers are widely exposed to diclofenac due to the high contamination levels often present in aquatic organisms. It is a potential risk to public health due its endocrine disruptor properties. Limited information is available about diclofenac behavior after food digestion to enable a more realistic scenario of consumer ...
