Metal fatigue is a major cause for failure of mechanical and structural components. We review the fracture mechanics of fatigue and Paris-Erdogan law for the mean behavior. After a consideration of experimental data reported by Virkler et al. (1979), we propose a continuous semimarkov process to model crack growth.

Abstract A loading stage for the scanning electron microscope has been used in conjunction with the stereoimaging technique to study fatigue crack closure for a center notched specimen of an aluminum alloy. The results are compared to similar measurements from single edge notched specimens of the same alloy and other materials.

The complete solution of the problem of a fatigue crack growing from an initial crack includes determination of the crack path. Macroscopic aspects of the main features of the path taken by a growing fatigue crack in a metallic material are reasonably well understood in a qualitative sense.

Abstract Fatigue crack growth (FCG) threshold has been determined on Ti6A14V, Al 7475-T7351, quenched and tempered steel 24CrMo4 as well as on the Ni-base alloys Inconel 617 and Nicrofer 5219 Nb. The main objective of the studies was to prove the transferability of the experimentally determined FCG threshold to service type fatigue loading.
