Crack Gages for Detecting Fatigue Crack Initiation
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1987The use of fatigue crack gages is examined, in order to provide a clear indication of fatigue crack inititation and early subscritical crack growth in structural steel details. The crack gage consists of a thin steel coupon that can be bonded to a structural member in the vicinity of a known stress raiser, such as at the end of a cover plate or near a ...

On Crack Initiation Mechanisms in Fretting Fatigue
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 2000By using the crack analogue model of rigid flat-ended contact, crack initiation in fretting fatigue is analyzed. The coefficient of friction at the edge of contact, which characterizes the asymptotic stress field, is considered as the primary controlling parameter in the process.

A Dislocation Model for Fatigue Crack Initiation
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1981The slip band formed in a grain on the material surface is a preferential site for crack initiation during low strain fatigue of polycrystalline metals. The forward and reverse plastic flow within the slip band is modeled in the present study by dislocations with different signs moving on two closely located layers, and it is assumed that their ...

Fatigue analysis for crack initiation
Quality and Reliability Engineering International, 1986AbstractFor the prediction of life leading to fatigue crack initiation, a method for performing a cycle‐by‐cycle local stress analysis at the stress concentration area of a structural component was developed. Elastoplastic stress‐strain values along the hysteresis loop are traced for each load reversal in making the life prediction calculations.
