A fatigue crack propagation model

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1984
Abstract A model for fatigue crack propagation has been developed which incorporates mechanical, cyclic and fatigue properties as well as a length parameter. The latter can be associated with the microstructure of the material. The fatigue failure criterion is based on a measure of the dissipated plastic strain energy.

Alloys and Fatigue Crack Propagation

2018
Aluminium alloys were for many decades the material of choice for aircraft structures. Although this prominence no longer exists, these alloys still represent a substantial part of the aircraft. This section briefly reviews the fatigue crack propagation behaviour of typical Al alloys, including Al-Li alloys of interest because of their low weight and ...

Anisotropy of Fatigue Crack Propagation

Journal of Basic Engineering, 1971
The anisotropy of fatigue crack propagation in hot rolled steel plate was studied for three orientations, viz., crack arrester, crack divider, and short transverse. The dependence of crack growth rate on stress intensity factor was shown to be sensitive to the microconstituents present and their orientation relative to the fracture plane and direction.

Mode II Fatigue Crack Propagation

Journal of Basic Engineering, 1971
Fatigue crack propagation rates were obtained for 2024-T3 bare aluminum plates subjected to in-plane, mode I, extensional loads and transverse, mode II, bending loads. These results were compared to the results of Iida and Kobayashi for in-plane mode I-mode II extensional loads.

Multispecimen Fatigue Crack Propagation Testing

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1981
Chains of miniature center-cracked-tension specimens were tested on a conventional testing machine and on a prototypic in-reactor fatigue machine as part of the fusion reactor materials alloy development program. Annealed and 20 percent cold-worked 316 stainless steel specimens were cycled under various conditions of temperature, frequency, stress ...

Modeling of Fatigue Crack Propagation

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 2004
Fatigue crack propagation was modeled by using the cyclic plasticity material properties and fatigue constants for crack initiation. The cyclic elastic-plastic stress-strain field near the crack tip was analyzed using the finite element method with the implementation of a robust cyclic plasticity theory.

Fatigue crack propagation—an analysis

Philosophical Magazine, 1968
Abstract A simple theory is developed to assess quantitatively the mechanism of fatigue crack propagation in metals. The basic laws governing fatigue are derived theoretically for failure in both the high and low stress regions, and the material parameters controlling crack propagation determined.

Fatigue crack propagation in torsion

Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1957
Abstract The redistribution of stress and strain in front of a growing crack in it twisted bar is derived, assuming the material to be ideally plastic. The result is used in connexion with a simple fracture criterion to determine the initial rate of growth of a fatigue crack. Experiments with torsion members are reported.
