Advances in research on fat infiltration and lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2022
Low back pain (LBP) is a disabling condition with no available cure, severely affecting patients’ quality of life. Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the leading cause of chronic low back pain (CLBP).

High-accuracy detection of supraspinatus fatty infiltration in shoulder MRI using convolutional neural network algorithms

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2023
BackgroundThe supraspinatus muscle fatty infiltration (SMFI) is a crucial MRI shoulder finding to determine the patient’s prognosis. Clinicians have used the Goutallier classification to diagnose it.

Correlation of atrophy and fatty infiltration on strength and integrity of rotator cuff repairs: a study in thirteen patients

open access: yes, 2007
In 13 patients, the development of supraspinatus muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration after rotator cuff tendon repair was quantified prospectively via magnetic resonance imaging.

Bone morphogenetic protein signaling in rotator cuff muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Backgroundreduced mass (atrophy) and increased fat content (fatty infiltration) of rotator cuff muscles are common complications of large or massive rotator cuff (RC) tears, and are believed to be irreversible even after tendon repairs.

The fatty infiltration into cervical paraspinal muscle as a predictor of postoperative outcomes: A controlled study based on hybrid surgery

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2023
BackgroundThe cervical paraspinal muscle (CPM) has an essential role in positioning, stabilizing and directing the cervical spine. However, information is lacking regarding the influence of CPM on outcomes following anterior cervical surgery.

The microbiome in human skin aging

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐related skin changes encompass the well‐known visible phenotypic alterations, together with microbiome dysbiosis and a series of molecular aging hallmarks. These hallmarks characterize not only a fully stablished aged phenotype but also the skin aging process itself.

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...
