Calculation of a three phase fault in a network with a power electronic based fault current limiter (FCL)

2005 European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications, 2005
The model of a fault current limiter (FCL) based on a six-pulse thyristor rectifier with a freewheeling diode is described in this paper. The FCL is connected to a transformer's neutral terminal. Furthermore the state space description and the calculation method are presented.

A Novel Structure for Bridge-Type Fault Current Limiter: Capacitor-Based Nonsuperconducting FCL

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2018
Taking into account extension of power systems, their interconnections, and increment of load demand, power capacity of networks is increased and the impedance of sources is decreased. Such variations in power systems resulted to occurring high ratings of fault currents.

Simulation of a Power Electronic Based Fault Current Limiter (FCL) in Case of Different Faults

2006 12th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference, 2006
The effects of a Fault Current Limiter (FCL) on different types of faults in a three-phase network are presented in this paper. The FCL is based on a six-pulse thyristor rectifier with a freewheeling diode. Parallel to the three branches of the rectifier a further thyristor branch is added to handle faults with connection to earth.

Effect of Fault Current Limiter (FCL) on reliability and protection coordination of distribution system

2016 24th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering (ICEE), 2016
Presence of distributed generations (DGs) is not without problem in distribution networks. In spite of their advantages these problems should also be solved. One of the most common problems is mismatching between fuse and recloser in temporary short circuits in presence of DGs. Hence, Fault Current Limiter (FCL) is used to solve the problem. The aim of

Specification of fault current limitation level for FCLs in power systems

Proceedings of the IEEE SoutheastCon 2010 (SoutheastCon), 2010
With the increasing capacity of power system, fault currents (CBs) may exceed the interrupting capacity ratings of circuit breakers. Fault current limiters (FCLs) can be applied to maintain circuit breakers within their interrupt ratings. The degree of fault current limiting on system performance is analyzed in radial and meshed system structures ...

Design Considerations of a Fault Current Limiting Dynamic Voltage Restorer (FCL-DVR)

IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, 2015
This paper proposes a new fault current limiting dynamic voltage restorer (FCL-DVR) concept. The new topology uses a crowbar bidirectional thyristor switch across the output terminals of a conventional back-to-back DVR. In the event of a load short, the DVR controller will deactivate the faulty phase of the DVR and activate its crowbar thyristor to ...

The Current-Diverting FCL-A Practical Solution to Fault Current Limiting

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1980
This paper is intended to bring to the attention of the electric power industry a practical means for achieving the benefits of fault-current limitation. This proposed scheme circumvents fundamental problems which have thus far prevented the realization of adequate, reliable fault limiters at high power voltage and current ratings.

Fault Current Limitation by a Transformer Type FCL Based on the Second Generation HTS Wires

IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, 2011
A transformer type superconducting fault current limiter (FCL) for electric power grids was developed utilizing a nonlinear resistor made of the second generation HTS wire. Using of the second generation HTS wire instead of the first one was found to reduce by an order the required amount of superconducting materials.

Analysis of DC Fault and Current-limiting Capability of FCLs for VSC-based DC Distribution System

2019 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2019
DC distribution system has received wide interests for the higher efficiency and greater operational flexibility. However, DC fault current increases rapidly, which may cause IGBTs in converters to be blocked for self-protection. Fault current limiters (FCLs) are effective to limit the fault current in DC system.
