Transformer fault protection for low impedance faults

Conference Record of the Twenty-Third International Power Modulator Symposium (Cat. No. 98CH36133), 2002
Precision measurements of transformer insulation quality demands minimizing damage during test-to-breakdown. A fault tolerant insertion system has been developed for this application. This paper addresses a current limiting model for this system design that protects the high current insertion transformer from sustaining irreparable damage.

Earth fault distance protection

IET Conference Publications, 2009
Earth fault distance protection with distance protection relays is common practice in solidly grounded networks. However, in compensated networks earth faults can cause big problems, because they do not extinguish themselves. To find the fault point is from high interest also in combination with network expansion. In previous investigations the authors

Preventive arc fault protection

2001 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition. Developing New Perspectives (Cat. No.01CH37294), 2002
An arc fault in switchgear is a failure with enormous effects and a high hazard potential to persons in its vicinity. Therefore the switchgear manufacturers intensively look for possibilities to minimize this hazard potential. The ways used in industrial practice can be separated in to two basic directions, the active and the passive protection.

The arc-fault circuit protection

Conference Record of the 2001 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. 36th IAS Annual Meeting (Cat. No.01CH37248), 2002
In electrical power systems bolted short-circuits are rare and the fault usually involves arcing and burning; mostly the limit value of minimum short-circuit depends on arcing-fault. In AC low voltage systems, the paper examines the arcing-fault branch circuits as weak points. Different protection measures are available against the arc-faults.

Faults and Protections

2010
This chapter describes symmetrical three phase faults (Section 13.1), breakers (Section 13.2) and relays (Section 13.3). The chapter also describes measurement devices of non-standard quantities during time domain simulations, namely the Phasor Measurement Unit (Section 13.4) and the bus frequency measurement (Section 13.5).
