Monitoring mosaic biotopes in a marine conservation zone by autonomous underwater vehicle. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol, 2019
Abstract The number of marine protected areas (MPAs) has increased dramatically in the last decade and poses a major logistic challenge for conservation practitioners in terms of spatial extent and the multiplicity of habitats and biotopes that now require assessment. Photographic assessment by autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) enables the consistent

Response and resilience of karst subterranean estuary communities to precipitation impacts

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 8, August 2023., 2023
Heavy precipitation events caused a halocline shift resulting in a mortality event at a karst subterranean estuary, affecting the fauna inhabiting under the halocline (dotted white line) at the marine groundwater layer (a‐b). Overall, marine species (c‐e) inhabiting the caves were impacted, and cave‐adapted fauna (f‐i) remain resilient to short‐term ...

Determination of the ecological water quality in the Orienco stream using benthic macroinvertebrates in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon

open access: yesIntegrated Environmental Assessment and Management, Volume 19, Issue 3, Page 615-625, May 2023., 2023
Abstract In recent years, pollution of watercourses in nearby protected ecosystems has increased due to urbanization. Standard physiochemical methods and probes are one way to monitor watercourses for quality. However, they often do not provide the full ecological status of the body of water.

Functional diversity loss and change in nocturnal behavior of mammals under anthropogenic disturbance

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 3, June 2022., 2022
Abstract In the Anthropocene, understanding the impacts of anthropogenic influence on biodiversity and behavior of vulnerable wildlife communities is increasingly relevant to effective conservation. However, comparative studies aimed at disentangling the concurrent effect of different types of human disturbance on multifaceted biodiversity and on ...

Understanding why consumers in China switch between wild, farmed, and synthetic bear bile products

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 3, June 2022., 2022
Abstract An important rationale for legally farmed and synthetic wildlife products is that they reduce illegal, wild‐sourced trade by supplying markets with sustainable alternatives. For this to work, more established illegal‐product consumers must switch to legal alternatives than new legal‐product consumers switch to illegal wild products.

Conservation overstretch and long‐term decline of wildlife and tourism in the Central African savannas

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 2, April 2022., 2022
Abstract When in 2010 the world's governments pledged to increase protected area coverage to 17% of the world's land surface, several Central African countries had already set aside 25% of their northern savannas for conservation. To evaluate the effectiveness of this commitment, we analyzed the results of 68 multispecies surveys conducted in the seven

Participatory scenario planning to facilitate human–wildlife coexistence

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 6, Page 1957-1965, December 2021., 2021
Abstract Fostering human–wildlife coexistence requires transdisciplinary approaches that integrate multiple sectors, account for complexity and uncertainty, and ensure stakeholder participation. One such approach is participatory scenario planning, but to date, this approach has not been used in human–wildlife contexts.

A new species of Emilia (Asteraceae, Senecioneae) from Lower Juba region, Somalia

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, Volume 39, Issue 6, June 2021., 2021
Emilia corallina is described as a new species endemic to the coastal area of southern Somalia close to the Kenyan border. It is closely related to E. bellioides, the only other species of the genus given for the Flora of Somalia. This narrow endemic grows in coastal dunes and madreporic limestone outcrops along the lower Juba coast and is reported at ...

Identifying migratory pathways of Nathusius' pipistrelles (Pipistrellus nathusii) using stable hydrogen and strontium isotopes

open access: yesRapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, Volume 35, Issue 6, 30 March 2021., 2021
Rationale Identifying migratory corridors of animals is essential for their effective protection, yet the exact location of such corridors is often unknown, particularly for elusive animals such as bats. While migrating along the German coastline, Nathusius' pipistrelles (Pipistrellus nathusii) are regularly killed at wind turbines.

Temperature‐driven color lightness and body size variation scale to local assemblages of European Odonata but are modified by propensity for dispersal

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 10, Issue 16, Page 8936-8948, August 2020., 2020
We quantified the color lightness and body volume of 99 European dragon‐ and damselflies (Odonata) and combined this trait information with survey data for 518 local assemblages across Europe to test whether trait‐environment relationships previously reported at coarse spatial scales also hold for spatially explicit local assemblages.
