Impacts of water conservation, wastewater treatment, and reuse on water quantity and quality stress mitigation in China

open access: yesJournal of Industrial Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Wastewater treatment plays a crucial role in removing pollutants. Water conservation and reuse of wastewater help to reduce freshwater use and to alleviate water stress. However, the extent to which water conservation, wastewater treatment, and reuse can contribute to water stress mitigation is not clear.

A novel sustainable role of compost as a universal protective substitute for fish, chicken, pig, and cattle, and its estimation by structural equation modeling [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Natural decomposition of organic matter is essential in food systems, and compost is used worldwide as an organic fermented fertilizer. However, as a feature of the ecosystem, its effects on the animals are poorly understood. Here we show that oral administration of compost and/or its derived thermophilic Bacillaceae, i.e., Caldibacillus hisashii and ...

Steady State Reduction of generalized Lotka-Volterra systems in the microbiome [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E 99, 032403 (2019), 2018
The generalized Lotka-Volterra (gLV) equations, a classic model from theoretical ecology, describe the population dynamics of a set of interacting species. As the number of species in these systems grow in number, their dynamics become increasingly complex and intractable. We introduce Steady State Reduction (SSR), a method that reduces a gLV system of

Survival of Fecal Coliforms in Frozen Vegetable Homogenates

open access: yesJournal of Food Protection, 1982
The resistance to freezing of fecal coliforms isolated from frozen vegetables was compared to that of Escherichia coli isolated from fecal sources. The objective was to see if lower resistance to freezing might explain frozen vegetable samples that contain fecal coliforms but not E. coli .

Technical Measures, Environmental Protection, and Trade

open access: yesReview of International Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Technical regulations are increasingly numerous, complex, and often less transparent than traditional price‐based measures. Widely employed to achieve nontrade policy objectives, these measures are frequently adopted for environmental protection purposes. However, the trade effects of environmental measures remain underexplored. Using a unique

The concentration and health risk assessment of heavy metals and microorganisms in the groundwater of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Contaminated water is increasingly linked to diseases worldwide, necessitating the safety evaluation of the sources of domestic and drinking water in every locality. The present study aimed to assess water safety in terms of lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), and microorganisms in the borehole and well water in

Rapid Enumeration and Identification of Stressed Fecal Coliforms

open access: yesJournal of Food Protection, 1979
A rapid (72 h) method for enumeration and subsequent identification of fecal coliforms is described. The procedure consists of plating a food suspension in an agar-repair medium (trypticase soy agar pour plates preincubated at 35 C for 2 h, then overlaid with violet red bile agar) incubated at 45.5 C.

Evaluation of m-T7 agar as a fecal coliform medium [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 1984
m-T7 agar, designed to improve recoveries of injured total coliforms, was evaluated for its effectiveness as a fecal coliform medium. The time and temperature of preincubation were found to be crucial to the optimal recovery of fetal coliforms. Isolation rates for fecal coliforms on m-T7 agar from sewage effluents were the highest when plates were ...

Recycling Agricultural Waste: Sustainable Solutions for Enhancing Livestock Nutrition

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 3, May 2025.
The increasing demand for sustainable agricultural practices prompts a reevaluation of feeding strategies in ruminant nutrition. Agricultural waste, often viewed as a by‐product, presents a promising opportunity to enhance the sustainability of livestock production systems.
