Impacts of inter-basin water diversion projects on the feedback loops of water supply–hydropower generation–environment conservation nexus [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences
To balance water resource distribution in different areas, inter-basin water diversion projects (IWDPs) have been constructed around the world. Unclear feedback loops of water supply–hydropower generation–environment conservation (SHE) nexus in IWDPs ...

Extended Cognition: Feedback Loops and Coupled Systems [PDF]

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Description of Complex Systems, 2017
The article explores two waves of active externalism. I first introduce the distinction between passive and active externalism and analyse a proposal of active externalism based on the principle of parity proposed by Clark and Chalmers.

Robustness from flexibility in the fungal circadian clock [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background Robustness is a central property of living systems, enabling function to be maintained against environmental perturbations. A key challenge is to identify the structures in biological circuits that confer system-level properties such as ...

A symmetric dual feedback system provides a robust and entrainable oscillator. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Many organisms have evolved molecular clocks to anticipate daily changes in their environment. The molecular mechanisms by which the circadian clock network produces sustained cycles have extensively been studied and transcriptional-translational ...

A system science perspective on burn-out: development of an expert-based causal loop diagram

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health, 2023
IntroductionBurn-out leads to reduced worker well-being, long-term absenteeism, and high costs for employers and society. Determinants at different levels may affect burn-out in an interrelated and dynamic manner.

Feedback Loop [PDF]

open access: yesMechanical Engineering, 2009
This article highlights about young engineers who want early performance feedback on how they are doing their jobs. One difference is that younger engineers believe the feedback should stream to them the same way other digitized information does: instantly and often.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Parameterising Translational Feedback Models of Autoregulatory RNA-Binding Proteins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2022
Post-transcriptional gene regulation is driven by RNA-binding proteins (RBPs). Recent global approaches suggest widespread autoregulation of RBPs through binding to their own mRNA; however, little is known about the regulatory impact and quantitative ...

Learning from feedback? Mature students’ experiences of assessment in higher education [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper draws on a longitudinal study of students who entered an ancient Scottish university directly from further education colleges (FECs) to discuss the role that different assessment regimes played in their university careers.
