Feeding behavior of lean and obese pigs
Physiology and Behavior, 1980Abstract Daily feeding behavior was characterized in ad lib fed lean Yorkshire and obese Ossabaw pigs from 12 to 14 weeks of age. Obese pigs consumed more feed per unit body weight, spent more time eating per day, and exhibited a slower rate of eating compared to lean pigs.

Definition : Precision feeding, or tailored feeding, is a strategy based on the frequent and individual (or small group) adjustment of the ration composition and quantity based on the animal’s nutritional requirements. Precision feeding should improve animal efficiency and reduce feed cost and nutrient excretion.Efficiency is defined as the ratio of ...

Physiology of feeding in miniature pigs
Journal of Morphology, 1973AbstractThe anatomy and physiology of feeding in miniature swine were studied, using gross dissection, electromyography, cinematography, and cineradiography.Small particles are preferred for ingestion, and large items are usually broken down outside of the oral cavity.

The physiological controls of feeding behavior in pigs are reviewed. Feeding patterns, central nervous system integration of the control systems and the influence of taste and olfaction are briefly considered, but the emphasis of the review is on the specific control systems that determine meal size.

Pigs and poultry have this in common in their place on the farm, they can both exist as separate and distinct units, more or less divorced from the general economy of the farm as a whole. Except in special circumstances, pigs cannot exist solely on farm grown foods and must rely on purchased foods, which in most cases have to be imported into this ...

The Feeding of Antibiotics to Pigs
Proceedings of the British Society of Animal Production, 1952The credit for the discovery that antibiotics in stable form added to feedstuffs (in amounts so small that they resemble vitamins) have growth-promoting properties, goes to Lederle Laboratories, a subsidiary of the American Cyanamid Company. This was in 1948 and was revealed during studies with residues following the manufacture of aureomycin.

Feed efficiency metrics in growing pigs
Journal of Animal Science, 2017The objective of the present study was to quantify the interrelationships between different feed efficiency measures in growing pigs and characterize pigs divergent for a selection of these measures. The data set included data from 311 growing pigs between 42 and 91 d of age from 3 separate batches.

Feeding and aggression in pigs
Applied Animal Ethology, 198312 groups of six 50-kg pigs were deprived of feed for 6, 12 or 24 h and then fed to satiety, allowing a trough space of 0.25 m a pig. Recordings of feeding and aggression showed that this trough space was insufficient to permit all pigs to feed simultaneously.
