As feedwater heaters age, performance deteriorates and leaks invariably occur. In order to keep the heater functioning properly, and to avoid the possibility of water backing into the turbine and causing damage, the leaking tubes are plugged. Usually, the initially plugged tubes cause small, if any, deterioration of performance.

Early Detection of Feedwater-Heater Leaks

This work describes a method of early detection of feedwater heater leaks. The method uses existing pressure, temperature, and flow measurements. The four leak indicators found were feedwater flow rate, drain temperature, drain cooler approach, and extraction line pressure drop. Deviations from normal operation were plotted for each of these indicators.

The development of the prototype system is summarized, and the way in which it can be used to assist plant personnel in determining the cause of a tube failure in a feedwater heater is illustrated.

Area allocation in multi-zone feedwater heaters

Energy Conversion and Management, 2007
A numerical method of analyzing closed system feedwater heaters is presented. The numerical results are validated using data generated from the classical log mean temperature difference (LMTD) method. It is found that the numerical results are very close (±1%) to the ones predicted by the LMTD method.
