Preconditioning of Calves from the Feedyard Perspective

American Association of Bovine Practitioners Conference Proceedings, 1986
Young calves or freshly weaned calves that are placed directly on high grain concentrate feeding can be expected to experience increased health-related problems compared to cattle of yearling age. Survey data of feedlot cattle in Texas generated by Bechtol and Jordan (I) show that morbidity and mortality averaged 7.29% and 0.70%, respectively.

Effect of Cattle Feedyard Runoff on Soil Infiltration Rates

Journal of Environmental Quality, 1975
AbstractA compact clay soil from a playa lake and a relatively porous, blocky, buried soil, both representative of feedyard runoff holding basins in the Texas High Plains, were treated with clear ground water and synthesized feedyard runoff. Infiltration rates were measured by using constant heads of liquid on undisturbed laboratory cores and in field ...

Effects of aerosolized endotoxin in feedyard dust on weanling goats

Small Ruminant Research, 2002
Abstract Weanling female Spanish goats ( n =36) were randomly allotted to four treatment groups (each group, n =9): principal dust group with antibiotic; principal dust group without antibiotic; control group with antibiotic; and control group without antibiotic. The principals were exposed to twenty-two 4 h dust treatments in a closed tent.

Diel VOC Emissions from a Beef Cattle Feedyard

2008 Providence, Rhode Island, June 29 - July 2, 2008, 2008
Odor emission from waste lagoons at concentrated animal feeding operations has been a source of concern for some time. More than 11 million cattle are fed annually in Texas Panhandle feedyards, representing thirty percent of the nation’s fed beef. The goal of this research was to determine if there is a diel effect in total VFA and sVOC emissions from ...

Managing beef-on-dairy on a feedyard

American Association of Bovine Practitioners Conference Proceedings
This talk walks through a systemic approach to evaluating incoming beef-on-dairy-cross calves entering into a feedlot and how to tailor protocols and management practices specific to each lot or group. There are numerous unknowns and different environments that beef-on-dairy-cross calves are raised in during the nursery and backgrounder phases. Thus,

Characterization of Ammonium Sorption by Beef Cattle Feedyard Manure

Transactions of the ASABE, 2012
Ammonia (NH3) emissions from beef cattle feedyards represent a loss of agronomically important N and can potentially affect the environment. Sorption of ammonium (NH4+) and NH3 by mineral and organic solids decreases the proportion of free, aqueous ammoniacal N, which reduces volatilization potential.

Economic Analysis of a Traveling Gun for Feedyard Dust Suppression

2007
Dust created in feedyards can adversely affect cattle performance. Dust suppression can be accomplished by moistening pen surfaces with traveling gun(s) sprinklers, solid-set sprinklers, and water trucks. This study specifically addresses the fixed and operational costs associated with a traveling gun sprinkler system for various sized feedyards.

312. Overview of the Timmerman Feedyard Management Internship

Journal of Animal Science
Abstract The Timmerman Feedyard Management Internship began in 1988 under the direction of Dr. Terry Klopfenstein. It is a nationally renowned feedyard management training program, exclusive to University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The internship trains students through comprehensive feedyard management classes and with real world ...
