The Female Gametophyte

1984
The female gametophyte develops from the megaspore formed in the nucellar tissue of the ovule. The megaspore enlarges and after some mitotic divisions a small coenocyte differentiates. In general, a megagametophyte consists, after cytokinesis, of an egg apparatus, a central cell, and antipodal cells.

THE BASIC AUTONOMY OF METASEQUOIA FEMALE GAMETOPHYTES

Acta Botanica Neerlandica, 1983
SUMMARY In France and The Netherlands in Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Hu and Cheng) only purely female cones are present budding at the end of February. In the absence of any male gametophytic tissue a normal and complete female gametophyte develops.

Female Gametophyte Development in Flowering Plants

Annual Review of Plant Biology, 2010
The multicellular female gametophyte, a unique feature of higher plants, provides us with an excellent experimental system to address fundamental questions in biology. During the past few years, we have gained significant insight into the mechanisms that control embryo sac polarity, gametophytic cell specification, and recognition between male and ...

Female Gametophytic Mutants: Diagnosis and Characterization

2010
In plants, gametes are formed in multicellular haploid structures, termed gametophytes. The female gametophyte of most higher plants comprises seven cells, which develop from a single haploid spore through nuclear proliferation and subsequent cellularization. The female gametophytic cells differentiate into four distinct cell types, which play specific

Features of the ultrastructure of the female gametophyte of Myosurus minimus

Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1968
Details are given of the ultrastructure of the megasporocyte, megaspore, and female gametophyte of Myosurus minimus. No evidence was found for the elimination of organelles from the megasporocyte, as reported in the orchid Dendrobium, but considerable changes were noted in the organelles during the maturation of the megaspore.

Female gametophyte-controlled pollen tube guidance

Biochemical Society Transactions, 2010
During the evolution of flowering plants, their sperm cells have lost mobility and are transported from the stigma to the female gametophyte via the pollen tube to achieve double fertilization. Pollen tube growth and guidance is largely governed by the maternal sporophytic tissues of the stigma, style and ovule.

Development and Function of the Female Gametophyte

2009
For many years, the small size of the ovule of Arabidopsis thaliana has impeded the implementation of reliable techniques for the isolation of large amounts of gametophytic cells. Recently, a combination of genetic strategies and technologies for large-scale transcriptional analysis has resulted in the identification of a significant number of genes ...

PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN THE FEMALE GAMETOPHYTE OF GINKGO BILOBA

American Journal of Botany, 1986
The female gametophyte of Ginkgo biloba is the only seed plant gametophyte known to contain chlorophyll. Measurements of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) indicate that a gametophyte growing within an ovule can receive significant quantities of light (70 μmol photons m

Development and function of the flowering plant female gametophyte

2019
Flowering plants constitute an indispensable basis for the existence of most organisms, including humans. In a world characterized by rapid population growth and climate changes, understanding plant reproduction becomes increasingly important in order to respond to the resource shortage associated with this development.

Pollen-tube guidance: beacons from the female gametophyte

Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2003
The sperm cell of a flowering plant cannot migrate unaided and it must be transported by the pollen-tube cell before successful fertilization can occur. The pollen tube is precisely guided to the target female gametophyte, the embryo sac, which contains the egg cell.
