Interpreting Neuroendocrine Hormones, Corticosterone, and Blood Glucose to Assess the Wellbeing of Anesthetized Rats during Euthanasia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Current recommendations for assessing animal wellbeing during euthanasia suggest that measuring neuroendocrine hormones-such as ACTH, noradrenaline, and adrenaline-is preferable to measuring corticosterone and blood glucose because of the sensitivity of ...

SPONTANEOUS ACTIVITY OF NEONATALLY ESTROGENIZED FEMALE RATS

open access: yesEndocrinologia Japonica, 1968
The running activity of normal and neonatally estrogenized persistentestrous (PE) and-diestrous (PD) rats was investigated by recording the number of revolutions of the drum attached to the activity cage, under a controlled photoperiod (14 hrs. L: 10 hrs. D). Normal rats displayed 4-day cyclic changes in spontaneous activity, while PE rats was acyclic.

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Evaluating the Histopathological Effects of Short-term and Long-term Doses of Ketamine Injection on Heart Tissue of Male and Female Rats [PDF]

open access: yesMajallah-i Dānishgāh-i ’Ulūm-i Pizishkī-i Shahīd Ṣadūqī Yazd
Introduction: Ketamine is a general anesthetic drug that acts by inhibiting the NMDA receptoran important component of excitatory neurotransmission. Existing of NMDA receptors all over the central nervous system and the special type of anesthesia induced

Features of neuro-endocrine and immune reactions to various water-salt loads in female rats

open access: yesJournal of Education, Health and Sport, 2018
Background. Previously, we have shown that the weekly load of rats with water-salt solutions of different chemical compositions causes both general and specific reactions of the parameters of metabolism.

Screening for lung cancer: A systematic review of overdiagnosis and its implications

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Low‐dose computed tomography (CT) screening for lung cancer may increase overdiagnosis compared to no screening, though the risk is likely low versus chest X‐ray. Our review of 8 trials (84 660 participants) shows added costs. Further research with strict adherence to modern nodule management strategies may help determine the extent to which ...

The influence of prolactin on bone mineral density (BMD) and some biochemical markers of ovariectomized rats

open access: yesCzech Journal of Animal Science, 2010
A model of postmenopausal osteoporosis was used in the study. 107 days after ovariectomy the animals were subcutaneously applied 1.0 IU PRL/kg BM or 1.0 IU calcitonin/kg BM for 7 days in single doses.

Female rat hippocampal cell density after conditioned place preference [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The hippocampus is important for learning tasks, such as conditioned place preference (CPP), which is widely used as a model for studying the reinforcing effects of drugs with dependence liability.

Angiotensin Type 2 Receptor Stimulation Increases Renal Function in Female, but Not Male, Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Accumulating evidence suggests that the protective pathways of the renin–angiotensin system are enhanced in women, including the angiotensin type 2 receptor (AT 2 R), which mediates vasodilatory and natriuretic ...

Glycosylated LGALS3BP is highly secreted by bladder cancer cells and represents a novel urinary disease biomarker

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urinary LGALS3BP is elevated in bladder cancer patients compared to healthy controls as detected by the 1959 antibody–based ELISA. The antibody shows enhanced reactivity to the high‐mannose glycosylated variant secreted by cancer cells treated with kifunensine (KIF).
