Preoperative prediction for periprosthetic bone loss and individual evaluation of bisphosphonate effect after total hip arthroplasty using artificial intelligence

open access: yesBone & Joint Research
Aims: This study was designed to develop a model for predicting bone mineral density (BMD) loss of the femur after total hip arthroplasty (THA) using artificial intelligence (AI), and to identify factors that influence the prediction.

Towards multiple 3D bone surface identification and reconstruction using few 2D X-ray images for intraoperative applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This article discusses a possible method to use a small number, e.g. 5, of conventional 2D X-ray images to reconstruct multiple 3D bone surfaces intraoperatively. Each bone’s edge contours in X-ray images are automatically identified.

Dissolving Microneedle for Maintaining the Integrity of HPV Virus‐Like Particles Enabling Durable Sterile Protection Across Various Mucosal Tissues

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A novel dissolving microneedle platform preserves HPV virus‐like particle (VLP) immunogenicity by maintaining structural integrity, crucial for eliciting potent immune responses. Buccal administration induces robust immune response, high neutralizing antibody titers, and durable sterile protection across oral and vaginal mucosal sites.

A juvenile cf. Edmontosaurus annectens (Ornithischia, Hadrosauridae) femur documents a poorly represented growth stage for this taxon

open access: yesVertebrate Anatomy, Morphology, Palaeontology, 2019
A nearly complete, but isolated, femur of a small hadrosaurid from the Hell Creek Formation of Montana is tentatively referred to Edmontosaurus annectens.

Stable isotope evidence of meat eating and hunting specialization in adult male chimpanzees [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Observations of hunting and meat eating in our closest living relatives, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), suggest that among primates, regular inclusion of meat in the diet is not a characteristic unique to Homo.

Toward Noninvasively Imaging pH at the Surface of Implanted Orthopedic Devices in Live Rabbits Using X‐ray Excited Luminescence Chemical Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Imaging pH in a live rabbit at the surface of a sensor‐coated titanium plate using X‐ray excited luminescent chemical imaging (XELCI). A raster scanning X‐ray beam generates radioluminescence from a spot on the sensor, and the luminescence passes through the tissue and is collected at two wavelengths to determine local pH.

An Organ‐on‐Chip Platform for Strain‐Controlled, Tissue‐Specific Compression of Cartilage and Mineralized Osteochondral Interface to Study Mechanical Overloading in Osteoarthritis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A mechanically active OsteoChondral Unit (OCU)‐on‐Chip platform mimicking the OCU's functional anatomy and the strain gradient across the osteochondral interface is presented. Upon compartment‐specific hyperphysiological compression, the model replicates mechanisms observed in osteoarthritis (OA) progression, such as calcium crystal accumulation ...
