Circadian fruit phenology: An overlooked crucial aspect of plant‐frugivore interactions

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 268-280, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The intrinsic ability of plants to face environmental diel changes is paramount for flowering and interactions with pollinators and herbivores. Surprisingly, despite the commendable research efforts on the ecology and evolution of fruit‐frugivore interactions, very ...

Plant and frugivore species characteristics drive frugivore contributions to seed dispersal effectiveness in a hyperdiverse community

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 238-253, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Seed dispersal by frugivores is a crucial step of the life cycle of most plants, influencing plant population and community dynamics. Although very important for most ecosystems, we are just beginning to understand which are the mechanisms driving frugivore‐mediated ...

Microclimatic variation regulates seed germination phenology in alpine plant communities

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 1, Page 249-262, January 2025.
This study combines novel laboratory experimentation based on detailed field microclimatic data to tackle the understudied topic of germination phenology in alpine habitats. The findings suggest a predictable phenological shift in the germination of alpine plants along microclimatic gradients.

A new tool to improve the estimates of interaction rewiring considering the whole community composition

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 8, Page 1438-1449, August 2024.
Abstract Understanding temporal dynamics in ecological networks is crucial to predict their capability to cope with global changes. Despite this, proper quantification of network dynamics still remains a challenge. Temporal dynamics are typically studied using data of interaction networks over time, through the evaluation of interaction turnover and ...
