2D Magnetic and Topological Quantum Materials and Devices for Ultralow Power Spintronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
2D magnets and topological quantum materials enable ultralow‐power spintronics by combining robust magnetic order with symmetry‐protected, Berry‐curvature‐driven transport. Fundamentals of 2D anisotropy and spin‐orbit‐coupling induced band inversion are linked to scalable growth and vdW stacking.

Nanoparticle-Induced Property Changes in Nematic Liquid Crystals

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2022
Doping liquid crystals with nanoparticles is a widely accepted method to enhance liquid crystal’s intrinsic properties. In this study, a quick and reliable method to characterise such colloidal suspensions using an optical multi-parameter analyser, a ...

Phasons and broken symmetries in ferroelectric liquid crystals [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review B, 1994
The phason dispersion and the linear electro-optic response in the ferroelectric Sm C* liquidcrystalline phase have been measured in an external magnetic field up to 14 T. In the presence of an external field the originally continuous phason spectrum splits into an opticlike and an acousticlike phason branch, separated by a field-dependent gap.

Atomic Layer Deposition in Transistors and Monolithic 3D Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Transistors are fundamental building blocks of modern electronics. This review summarizes recent progress in atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the synthesis of two‐dimensional (2D) metal oxides and transition‐metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), with particular emphasis on their enabling role in monolithic three‐dimensional (M3D) integration for next ...

Effects of weak anchoring on C1 and C2 chevron structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We present a theoretical study of the effect of weak anchoring on the transition between C1 and C2 chevron structures in smectic C liquid crystals. We employ a continuum theory which allows for variable cone, azimuthal and layer tilt angles.

Electrode and Microstructure Dependence of Oxygen Diffusion in Ferroelectric Hafnium Zirconium Oxide Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Significant nanoscale oxygen diffusion coefficient variations are measured in ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide films with grain boundaries and electrode interfaces exhibiting values 104 times larger than the grain cores. Overall coefficients are 10X larger for films prepared with metal nitride electrodes compared to refractory metals. New insights

Polymorph‐Specific Electronic Transduction in WO3 during Molecular Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Metal‐oxide polymorphs with similar surface chemistry can nevertheless exhibit distinct sensing properties. In γ‐ and ε‐WO3, analyte adsorption appears comparable; yet, only ε‐WO3 induces a pronounced lattice electronic perturbation that accommodates charge in sub‐conduction band minimum states.

Nano-colloids of Sn2P2S6 in Nematic Liquid Crystal Pentyl-cianobiphenile

open access: yesCondensed Matter Physics, 2010
It has been shown experimentally that the ferroelectric nano-particles, in common with other molecular additives, shift the clearing temperature, Tc, extending or reducing the two-phase coexistent region and changing the average order parameter of the ...

Enhanced Kerr effect in vertically aligned deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We disclose the vertically aligned deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal (VADHFLC) whose Kerr constant ($K_{\mathrm{kerr}}\approx 130$~nm/V$^2$ at $\lambda=543$~nm) is one order of magnitude higher than any other value previously reported for ...
