Fertilization 2: Polyspermic Fertilization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
During fertilization in animals, a haploid egg nucleus fuses with a haploid sperm nucleus to restore the diploid genome. In most animals including mammals, echinoderms, and teleostei, the penetration of only one sperm into an egg is ensured at fertilization because the entry of two or more sperm is prevented by polyspermy block systems in these eggs ...

Why and When Are Evidence‐Based Interventions Adopted in Paediatric Supportive Care? A Qualitative Exploration of the Determinants of Photobiomodulation Implementation

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating side effect of childhood cancer and stem cell transplant treatments. It affects the quality of life of children and young people (CYP) and places a strain on services. Photobiomodulation is recommended for oral mucositis prevention in international guidance but is poorly implemented in UK ...

Insights into a long life without cancer: The case of the bowhead whale

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Long‐lived, large‐bodied organisms have evolved powerful anticancer mechanisms that preserve cellular and tissue integrity across extended lifespans. A recent study by Firsanov et al. shows that greater genome stability is a key factor underlying the remarkable longevity and cancer resistance of one such species, the bowhead whale.

The Complexity Around Mosaic Embryo Decision Making– A Genetic Counselling Perspective

open access: yesFertility & Reproduction, 2022
Background: In recent years there is an evident increase in the interest of transferring mosaic embryos. Our genetic counselling team have reported mosaic results to over 250 patients since the beginning of 2020, and there is an upward trend in patient ...

DNA methylation and expression of MAPRE3 affect overall survival of early‐stage non‐small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Both cg12821679MAPRE3 methylation and MAPRE3 expression are significantly associated with overall survival (OS) of non‐small cell lung cancer. Meanwhile, MAPRE3 expression significantly modified the effect of smoking cessation on OS. Smoking cessation benefits OS merely for patients with high MAPRE3 expression.

Embryo utilisation rate and transferable embryo to oocyte ratio correlate positively with livebirth rate but negatively with oocyte number: analysis of 14,156 fresh IVF/ICSI cycles

open access: yesJournal of Ovarian Research
Background The live birth rates (LBRs) do not rise after a certain number of oocytes are collected in fresh IVF cycles. Although the detrimental effect of high ovarian response on the endometrium has been recognised, the effect of high oocyte yield on ...

Overview of molecular signatures of senescence and associated resources: pros and cons

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cells can enter a stress response state termed cellular senescence that is involved in various diseases and aging. Detecting these cells is challenging due to the lack of universal biomarkers. This review presents the current state of senescence identification, from biomarkers to molecular signatures, compares tools and approaches, and highlights ...

Understanding the impact of lifestyle and demographic factors on DNA fragmentation index (DFI) among infertile men

open access: yesBMC Urology
Background Sperm DNA fragmentation detection methods include SCSA, SCD, COMET assay, and TUNEL. In 2021, the DFI test became the first evidence-based sperm DNA integrity test included in international guidelines. However, limited data exists from Nigeria.
