The short report by Steptoe and Edwards that appeared in the Lancet in 1978, entitled “Birth after the reimplantation of a human embryo”, marked the culmination of a long development in the field of reproductive medicine and the beginning of in vitro fertilization (IVF) as a routine method of infertility treatment (Table 1). IVF means the fertilization

Appraisal of in vitro fertilization
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, 1993In-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer techniques are now used all over the world (53 countries). The results of 492 of all world units were collected from national surveys and registries of different countries. Since 1985, more than 53,635 women were treated and 34,316 babies were born by 224,473 treatment cycles, followed by more than 160,518 ...

In-vitro fertilization; the ethics
Human Reproduction, 1986This paper is addressed to practitioners. It seeks to acquaint them with 'ethical' arguments against their work which, because they are simple and plausible, persuade many people. These arguments are briefly rehearsed and as briefly examined. A more positive ethics of in-vitro fertilization is presented which seeks to respect (a) what is known in the ...

In vitro fertilization and embryo transfer are now becoming more widely available for the treatment of infertile couples. Infertility due to tubal blockage or adhesions, resulting from pelvic inflammatory disease, is conventionally treated by laparoscopie adhesiolysis or by salpingostomy using microsurgical techniques.

Smoking and in-vitro fertilization

A 37-year-old woman who has never been pregnant and her 40-year-old husband have been attempting to conceive a child for the past 3 years. An infertility evaluation has shown no cause for the difficulty. She is ovulating regularly, and a hysterosalpingogram shows that her reproductive tract is anatomically normal.

In Vitro Fertilization and Alternatives [PDF]
PERHAPS as many as 500,000 American women are infertile as a result of Fallopian tube dysfunction. Because this represents an important national health problem, work in our laboratory has focused on novel approaches to alleviate such infertility, using nonhuman primate experimental models. The rationale for pursuing new experimental methods, as well as

Anesthesia for in-vitro fertilization
Current Opinion in Anaesthesiology, 2005To review the most recent literature on anesthesia for in-vitro fertilization.Very limited new information has become available in the review period. Propofol seems to be an acceptable option for anesthesia/sedation during in-vitro fertilization but more research is necessary to definitively establish its safety.

As already indicated, recent progress in our knowledge of fertilization mechanisms is due primarily to the development of in vitro fertilization techniques. Despite many early claims (e.g., by Shenk in 1878; see review by Thibault in 1969), the first successful method was not devised until 1954, when Dauzier et al.
