Climate effects of recycled fertilizers and biochar: emissions of nitrous oxide, methane and ammonia in a field experiment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background Nitrogen (N) fertilizers are essential for crop production. Farmyard manure and slurry traditionally constitute about half of the total N inputs into crop production in Switzerland.

Rice residue management effects on greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants on smallholder farms in southern Vietnam

open access: yesWaste Management Bulletin
Vietnam is a major producer and exporter of rice globally, and approximately 47 million tonnes of rice residue is produced annually. Rice residues are an economically valuable natural resource and a primary source of organic matter and nutrients for rice

Challenges and opportunities on the use of bio fertilizers: cases study from Senegal and Kenya [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Not only phosphorus (P) bioavailable in soil is very low but phosphate fertilizing efficiency is also low. Consequently, annual world P demand increases predicting phosphorus stock end in the coming 125 years.

Backbone Heterojunction Photocatalysts for Efficient Sacrificial Hydrogen Production

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Herein, a ‘single‐component’ organic semiconductor photocatalyst is presented in which a molecular donor is bonded to a polymer acceptor. The resultant material demonstrates exceptional photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution in aqueous triethylamine with an outstanding external quantum efficiency of 38% at 420 nm.

Interactions with native microbial keystone taxa enhance the biocontrol efficiency of Streptomyces

open access: yesMicrobiome
Background Streptomyces spp. are known for producing bioactive compounds that suppress phytopathogens. However, previous studies have largely focused on their direct interactions with pathogens and plants, often neglecting their interactions with the ...

The determinants of organic fertilizers used in urban and peri-urban agriculture: an econometric analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Urban poverty, increases in food demand, land pressures, pollution resulting from solid waste generation and from mineral fertilizers uses in urban and peri-urban agriculture, are becoming real issues in agriculture in Cameroon, and there is a growing ...

Reevaluating the Activity of ZIF‐8 Based FeNCs for Electrochemical Ammonia Production

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Though receiving much attention, the field of electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) to ammonia is marked by doubts about whether this reaction is possible in aqueous media. This work sheds light on this question for iron single‐atom on N‐doped carbon (FeNC) catalysts—a class of well‐known catalysts that is also worth testing for the sister
