Electronic fetal heart rate monitoring
British Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2008Electronic fetal heart rate monitoring is a useful monitoring tool to assess intrapartum fetal wellbeing and has been shown to improve perinatal outcomes in at-risk fetuses. This article describes the benefits, criticisms of its use during labour, the pathophysiology and care pathway based on the cardiotocogram features.

Patterns in the FHT reflect the oxygen status of the fetal brain. Fetal adaptive response to progressive hypoxemia and acidosis are detectable and produce recognizable patterns in the fetal heart rate.

Improved Method for Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring
2005 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology 27th Annual Conference, 2005The fetal ECG can be detected in the recorded abdominal signals. A new procedure to compute the fetal heart rate (FHR) is proposed. The abdominal signal is first preprocessed in order to remove the baseline and the uterine contractions. Then the ECG of the mother (MECG) is removed using coherent averaging and optimizing the averaged MECG template.
