5‐azacytidine and fetal hemoglobin

American Journal of Hematology, 1984
AbstractThe evidence that 5‐azacytidine stimulates the production of Hb F and F cells in baboon and man is reviewed. The mechanism of this effect is not entirely clear, but 5‐azacytidine produces hypomethylation of the γ gene at certain sites, and gene expression and DNA hypomethylation are related phenomena in many other systems. Other mechanisms have

Fetal hemoglobin levels in adults

Blood Reviews, 1994
The synthesis of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) is normally reduced to very low levels of less than 0.6% of the total hemoglobin in adults. The HbF is restricted to a sub-population of erythrocytes termed 'F-cells'; 85% of the normal adult population have 0.3% to 4.4% F-cells.

Fetal Hemoglobin Variants in Mice

Science, 1968
Two strains of mice, DBA and C3H, have a fetal globin polypeptide chain which differs in electrophoretic mobility from the corresponding fetal chain of the C57B1 strain. Mice of the DBA and C3H strains also differ from those of the C57B1 in adult hemoglobin type. Results of backcrossing the (DBA × C57B1) hybrid to the C57B1 suggest that the fetal chain

Oxygen Transport by Fetal Bovine Hemoglobin

Journal of Molecular Biology, 1996
The functional properties of fetal bovine hemoglobin have been studied as a function of temperature, chloride and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG) concentration. The fetal bovine erythrocyte has six times the concentration of the allosteric modulator DPG compared with the adult cell, and yet the oxygen affinity of the fetal hemoglobin still exceeds that of

Fetal Hemoglobin in Neonatal Anemia

Pediatrics, 1991
To the Editor.— A recent paper in Pediatrics by Bard and Prosmanne1 described an elevation of fetal hemoglobin (Hb-F) production in infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and oxygen dependency. The authors described a novel approach to the evaluation of occult hypoxemia in infants, with potential application in a wide range of ...

Mouse hemoglobin during gestation Absence of fetal hemoglobin

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure and Molecular Enzymology, 1982
A "fetal hemoglobin' has been reported to exist during mouse gestation, Investigations using CMC chromatography, starch gel electrophoresis or isoelectric focusing have shown a hemoglobin band from fetal tissues, and blood was obtained which was different from the adult hemoglobin and designated a "fetal hemoglobin'.

Postnatal Loss of Bovine Fetal Hemoglobin

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1971
SUMMARY Ten Holstein-Friesian and 5 Ayrshire calves were used to study changes of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) during growth of the calves. In the newborn calves, HbF concentration was between 60 and 97% (mean 89.2%) and hemoglobin A (HbA) concentration was between 3 and 31% (mean 10.8%).
