Management of fetofetal transfusion syndrome

Prenatal Diagnosis, 2005
AbstractFeto‐fetal transfusion syndrome contributes heavily to high rates of perinatal mortality and morbidity in monochorionic multiple pregnancies. Its prenatal management has been controversial for at least 25 years. We review the recent literature in order to present the basis for a pragmatic reappraisal of the management of this condition.

Monochorionic triplet pregnancy complicated by severe fetofetal transfusion

Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research, 2005
AbstractWe report two cases of fetofetal transfusion in monochorionic triamniotic triplet pregnancies. Case 1: At 23 weeks’ gestation an amnioreduction was carried out. Three days later, the donor triplet died in utero. Immediately after that, a cardiotocogram of the triplet who had been thought to be unaffected by the fetofetal transfusion, showed a ...

Successful outcome after serial amnioreductions in triplet fetofetal transfusion syndrome

Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2003
Triplet fetofetal transfusion is an extremely rare complication with high perinatal mortality. Its rarity does not allow any prospective randomized study on various interventional methods to be conducted. We report one case of triplet fetofetal transfusion syndrome with survival of all three fetuses.

Fetofetal transfusion syndrome in triplet pregnancies: Outcome after endoscopic laser surgery

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2005
The purpose of this study was to determine the outcome of fetofetal transfusion syndrome in triplet pregnancies after treatment with endoscopic laser ablation of communicating placental vessels.Cases of severe fetofetal transfusion syndrome that occur in triplet pregnancies and that are treated with endoscopic laser ablation of placental anastomosis ...

Neonatal cranial ultrasonographic findings in preterm twins complicated by severe fetofetal transfusion syndrome

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1998
To investigate cranial ultrasonographic findings in survivors of monochorionic pregnancies complicated by fetofetal transfusion syndrome.Case details of all monochorionic twin pregnancies complicated by fetofetal transfusion syndrome were obtained from the Centre for Fetal Care database for a 3-year period.

Pseudoamniotic band syndrome: a rare complication of monochorionic twins with fetofetal transfusion syndrome treated by laser coagulation

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2008
The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence and risk factors of limb constriction defects that are related to pseudoamniotic band syndrome (PABS) after selective fetoscopic laser surgery (FLS) in fetofetal transfusion syndrome (FFTS).All consecutive cases of FFTS that were treated by selective FLS between 1999 and 2006 were examined ...

Hydrostatic and osmotic pressure gradients produce manifestations of fetofetal transfusion syndrome in a computerized model of monochorial twin pregnancy

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1996
In spite of recent advances in the assessment and treatment of fetofetal transfusion syndrome, its underlying mechanism remains controversial. We aimed to determine whether the clinical features of fetofetal transfusion syndrome could be explained by unidirectional or bidirectional intertwin transfusion along placental vascular anastomoses. We ...

Multiple thromboembolic events in fetofetal transfusion syndrome in triplets contributing to the understanding of pathogenesis of hydranencephaly in combination with polymicrogyria

Human Pathology, 2006
Over the last 180 years, several theories concerning the origin of hydranencephaly have been proposed with an emphasis on infectious, aplastic, and vascular etiologies. In this report, we present a case of triplets with fetofetal transfusion syndrome of which 2 fetuses (1 and 2) developed almost similar hydranencephaly, whereas the third exhibited the ...

Placental angioarchitecture in monochorionic twin pregnancies: Relationship to fetal growth, fetofetal transfusion syndrome, and pregnancy outcome

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2000
We sought to correlate placental vasculature with fetal growth and outcome in monochorionic twins.Eighty-two patients with consecutive monochorionic pregnancies underwent biweekly ultrasonography for determination of fetal growth and well-being. After delivery, blinded placental injection studies delineated vascular anastomoses and territory share ...

Timely Diagnosis by Cardiotocography of Critical Fetal Reserve Due to Fetofetal Transfusion Syndrome

Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 1986
Summary: In a review of 90 twin pregnancies monitored by antenatal cardiotocography there were 8 cases of subsequently proven fetofetal transfusion syndrome. In 2 of these evidence of severe fetal stress had indicated immediate delivery; the 4 babies survived in circumstances that were perilous.
