Prenatal Substance Abuse: Short- and Long-term Effects on the Exposed Fetus

open access: yesPediatrics, 2013
Prenatal substance abuse continues to be a significant problem in this country and poses important health risks for the developing fetus. The primary care pediatrician’s role in addressing prenatal substance exposure includes prevention, identification ...

Bayesian Body Schema Estimation using Tactile Information obtained through Coordinated Random Movements [PDF]

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics, 31:3, 118-134, 2017, 2016
This paper describes a computational model, called the Dirichlet process Gaussian mixture model with latent joints (DPGMM-LJ), that can find latent tree structure embedded in data distribution in an unsupervised manner. By combining DPGMM-LJ and a pre-existing body map formation method, we propose a method that enables an agent having multi-link body ...

Leveraging current insights on IL‐10‐producing dendritic cells for developing effective immunotherapeutic approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In vivo IL‐10 produced by tissue‐resident tolDC is involved in maintaining/inducing tolerance. Depending on the agent used for ex vivo tolDC generation, cells acquire common features but prime T cells towards anergy, FOXP3+ Tregs, or Tr1 cells according to the levels of IL‐10 produced. Ex vivo‐induced tolDC were administered to patients to re‐establish/

Quality Characteristics of Concrete Poles Manufactured in the Ibadan Metropolis, Southwest Nigeria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In Nigeria, power is transmitted by overhead transmission lines fixed on wooden or concrete poles. Often times these poles collapse under excessive loads occasioned by storm and accidents.

Taurine promotes glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion in enteroendocrine L cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Taurine, a sulfur‐containing amino acid, is likely taken up by enteroendocrine L cells via the taurine transporter. This process increases the levels of cytosolic ATP. The increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentrations and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion through membrane depolarization is caused by the closure of ATP‐sensitive potassium channels ...

Assessment of Fetal and Maternal Well-Being During Pregnancy Using Passive Wearable Inertial Sensor [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Assessing the health of both the fetus and mother is vital in preventing and identifying possible complications in pregnancy. This paper focuses on a device that can be used effectively by the mother herself with minimal supervision and provide a reasonable estimation of fetal and maternal health while being safe, comfortable, and easy to use.

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Campylobacter fetus infections in humans: exposure and disease.

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 2014
Campylobacter fetus can cause intestinal illness and, occasionally, severe systemic infections. Infections mainly affect persons at higher risk, including elderly and immunocompromised individuals and those with occupational exposure to infected animals.
